About the Team

You’ll be joining the CNN Growth Team, which builds engaging experiences that strengthen our direct relationship with users. We collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and product analysts to explore growth opportunities, generate hypotheses, and experiment with new features that drive user acquisition and engagement.

Our tech stack includes JavaScript, Node, Python, Svelte, Sass, and AWS services. The team values flexibility, curiosity, and technical depth—we balance innovation with reliability as we create high-impact experiences for millions of CNN users.

About the Role

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on CNN’s Growth Team, you’ll lead technical strategy and architecture for key initiatives that power CNN’s registered user and subscription experiences. You’ll work across teams to design scalable systems, set engineering standards, and mentor others to deliver secure, performant, and reliable products.

You’ll play a key role in shaping the future of CNN’s digital business, helping to expand our direct-to-consumer offerings and grow engagement through innovation and data-driven experimentation.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead architectural design and technical decision-making across multiple systems and teams
  • Design scalable, high-performance applications that support user registration, subscriptions, and personalization
  • Collaborate with product, design, analytics, and operations teams to deliver impactful experiences
  • Champion software engineering best practices and operational excellence across the organization
  • Guide implementation of observability, resiliency, and security practices across services
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and influence long-term platform direction
  • Mentor engineers at all levels and help shape a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and technical excellence

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of experience building and scaling production software systems
  • Deep proficiency in JavaScript (ES6/7), Node, and modern web frameworks
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and performance optimization
  • Demonstrated success driving cross-team technical initiatives from design through delivery
  • Experience with AWS services, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools (Datadog, New Relic, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills—you can explain complex concepts clearly
  • Proven ability to mentor engineers and influence architecture across teams
  • A passion for creating engaging, data-driven user experiences at scale

Bonus Points

  • Experience with growth experimentation frameworks or feature flag systems
  • Background integrating identity, payment, or subscription APIs
  • Familiarity with Svelte, Vue, or React and micro-frontend architecture
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and automation practices
  • Exposure to personalization and user segmentation systems
  • Prior experience in a media or direct-to-consumer environment
