Position purpose :
Under the direction of the managers of the Psychotherapy and Mental Health team, and in collaboration with the Student Support team, the role is to lead the initial triage process in order to assess students’ general mental health and well-being needs, and to direct them to the appropriate professionals and resources, thereby fostering a culture of well-being, perseverance, and academic success.
In this role, your responsibilities will include :
Conduct the complex assessment process (administer questionnaires, evaluate needs, provide support) by asking personal and relevant questions to help identify, in collaboration with the student, their mental health and wellness needs.
Meet with walk‑in students to support them when they are experiencing emotional distress. Intervene in suicide prevention and establish safety plans with students in crisis or at risk.
Collaborate closely with all units within the Health, Wellness, and Student Support sector to stay informed about available services and ensure students are directed to the most appropriate resource. Participate in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary meetings to follow program and service developments, present student needs, and invite colleagues to explain how their unit can address them. Consult regularly with colleagues in health promotion, student community support, academic accommodations, psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc., to observe and identify trends in student needs.
Refer students to professionals within the sector following the primary assessment process, while maintaining ongoing communication with the team to ensure an equitable distribution of cases. This responsibility takes into account each professional’s expertise, experience, and availability. Provide regular feedback to colleagues on the effectiveness of the referral process and any challenges encountered (e.g., wait times) to support continuous improvement.
Maintain ongoing development of skills in active listening, empathy, and clinical judgment to demonstrate strong knowledge, action, and interpersonal skills during assessments. Participate in clinical consultation sessions to enhance competencies and contribute by sharing student needs and emerging trends to help adapt service offerings.
Refer students to internal and external resources as appropriate. In alignment with the stepped‑care model, direct students with specialized needs to external resources. In crisis situations, connect students with the appropriate services according to established crisis‑management procedures.
Maintain relationships with community organizations to stay informed about their services and availability. Communicate referral needs according to established processes to build and sustain partnerships.
