Position purpose

Reporting to the Manager, Human Rights Office, the incumbent provides strategic advice to help foster a University environment that is inclusive, accessible, equitable and free from discrimination. The incumbent makes use of their deep expertise in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA), in human rights, and in how to combat racism and hate in order to: counsel members of the University community; use a trauma-informed approach to respond to requests and questions about racism, hate and EDIA; analyze institutional policies and regulations; and mobilize equity-seeking groups to effect sustainable transformation within the organization. Fosters an institutional culture based on inclusion and respect for the rights of others by designing and running bilingual training modules, mobilizing the community, and conducting Office outreach initiatives. In doing so, the incumbent ensures that legal and regulatory obligations are met, specifically with respect to the Human Rights Code, the AODA, and Bill 166.

Specific accountabilities

  • Provide advice to senior management and units on issues involving equity, human rights and how to combat hate and racism in order to support informed decision-making and meet legal and institutional obligations.
  • Respond to requests and answers questions on racism, hate or EDIA with sensitivity and by paying close attention to the various impacts that such experiences may have on individuals who identify as trans, gender non-conforming or queer, or who are living with a handicap, or who are members of a religious, racialized, or other historically marginalized community. Provide information on the options available on campus to encourage interventions that are appropriate and equitable for all University community members.
  • Analyze the University’s policies, regulations and practices with an eye to equity in order to identify shortcomings, propose adjustments and monitor legislative changes with respect to EDIA.
  • Design, adapt and promote bilingual training modules on accessibility, the duty to accommodate, and the fight against racism and hate in order to build an inclusive and informed organizational culture.
  • Provide sessions that raise awareness among students, staff members and professors to bolster their understanding of their rights and responsibilities within the University community.
  • When creating Office initiatives, coordinate consultations with equity-seeking groups, student associations and institutional stakeholders to ensure authentic representation.
  • Recruit and facilitate representative advisory committees that inform the Office’s strategic directions from the perspective of a diverse community.
  • Design communication and promotion tools to increase the visibility of EDIA initiatives and position the Office as the University’s reference in terms of human rights and inclusion.
  • Coordinate activities related to action plans and manage data on designated groups to measure progress and support rigorous accountability.
  • Assist in drafting annual reports, reports submitted to the Ministry, and requests for funding in order to meet institutional obligations and consolidate the Office’s resources.
  • Ensure administrative and operational follow-up on current requests to guarantee that the services provided by the Office run smoothly and respond appropriately.

Competencies, knowledge, experience and skills

  • University degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five years’ experience in EDIA, human rights, employment equity or a related field, including experience in advising, analyzing or intervening in an institutional or community setting
  • Extensive knowledge of legal frameworks (Human Rights Code, Employment Equity Act, AODA, Bill 166) and of Web accessibility guidelines, as well as experience in applying them
  • Experience in consulting members of marginalized communities and in mobilizing them
  • Significant relevant experience in digital accessibility and in designing online training
  • Excellent mastery of French and English (spoken and written)
  • Advanced knowledge of computer systems and software, including graphic design and web applications, social media platforms, spreadsheets, databases, the internet and email
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a bilingual environment
  • Strong sense of organization, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Experience in designing and implementing communication plans
  • Experience in giving presentations to large groups in both official languages
  • Experience in project management and in planning and organizing events
  • Strong public relations, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Availability to work outside normal office hours during events
  • Professional certifications in accessibility (CPACC, IAAP) is an asset
  • Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional title (CCIP – CCDI) is an asset
  • Graduate certificate or professional certificate in equity, diversity, inclusion, and/or accessibility issued by a recognized Canadian post‑secondary educational institution is an asset
  • Experience in writing reports and in drafting funding requests is an asset
