Reporting to the Director of Faculty Relations, works conjunctly with the Faculty Relations team to support the strategic business role of the sector. Contributes to an interactive HR Service model by providing first line advice on academic labour relations and by building organizational capacity through working collaboratively with others. Supports, guides and liaises with the union groups governed by existing collective agreements and non-unionized academic members by providing expert advice to management and members of the academic community on the interpretation and application of the various new or existing collective agreements and on any labour and employment-related matters including but not limited to policies and procedures, collective bargaining, grievance handling and resolution, mediation and arbitration, conflict investigation and resolution, discipline and performance management for academic staff. Work with all stakeholders including management and union representatives to foster a positive, harmonious and proper labour relations climate.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Responsible for a variety of activities leading up to, during, and following the collective bargaining process (developing mandates which support the University’s strategic direction; conducting legal research, comparative studies, data gathering and analysis; benchmarking; writing and reviewing proposals; participating actively in all bargaining sessions; acting as a spokesperson when assigned to do so by the Director, Faculty Relations)
- Provides information sessions to administrators within the University community on the implementation of the new provisions of the collective agreement. Provides informal and formal training mechanisms to academic staff and administrative staff on collective agreements, emerging jurisprudence and changing legal frameworks, and management applications.
- Prepares and disseminates administrative management guides to administrators to facilitate their roles and the eventual reduction in the number of grievances brought by these groups.
- Liaises with union representatives (APUO, APTPUO, CUPE Local 2626) and support staff in faculties involved in the administration and application of collective agreements (preparing reports for the unions; administrating Union funds; liaising with payroll and benefits; prepares statistics and reports for corporate consideration).
What you will bring:
- Undergraduate degree specializing in Labour Relations, or a related area of study or related professional experience
- Minimum of 7 years in Human Resources or program administration experience, preferably within a unionized environment
- Be a member of a professional order either CHRP or Law society of Ontario would be an asset
- Knowledge of the collective bargaining process, plus extensive collective agreement interpretation and advising abilities along with grievance/arbitration process management experience and of labour relations principles and all related employment legislation and jurisprudence.
- Experience in large multi-union organizations required, preferably in a University (or similar knowledge-based environment). Ability to prioritize work effectively, organize a high volume of work and ensure compliance and completion of required processes and paperwork in a timely fashion.
- Proven ability to critically assess effectiveness of work processes and tools and initiate creative and innovative recommendations to ensure continuous quality of improvement.
- Demonstrated professional work ethic and behaviour in interaction with internal and external contracts and in maintaining confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict and adversarial situations in a professional and competent manner.
- Possess excellent written communications skills to develop written correspondence, standard operating procedures, and documentation in support of employee relations initiatives
- Strong data analysis competencies and proficiency in using software tools
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills; strong communication, interpersonal and listening skills; consulting, mediation and facilitation skills; strong presentation and training capabilities; excellent judgment and relationship management skills; strong ability to persuade and gain consensus; a proactive service orientation; and awareness of and sensitivity to diversity.
- Ability to work under pressure to adhere to strict deadlines
- Demonstrated effectiveness working as a team member through collaboration, respect and effective communication.
- Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating training sessions.
