Reporting to the Director, Strategic Services, the Senior Analyst, Analytics and Reporting, is responsible for the implementation of business intelligence initiatives supporting strategic operations of the Office of Vice President Research and the uOttawa research community. The incumbent must ensure precise and reliable strategic information is available to stakeholders, have a solid understanding of the research performance indicators, business operations, University’s IT systems and priorities. As an expert in the use of business intelligence tools, the incumbent proposes and implements solutions with a few to support improved decision-making.
Finally, the incumbent provides guidance and advice to clients in order to align technology solutions with business objectives and requirements.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Business analysis: Provides professional expertise, analyzes business and strategic needs and recommends sound and justified business intelligence solutions to help monitor quantitative data on the University’s research portfolio, solve business problems, and assist in determining technical, operational and economic feasibility.
- Data analysis: Provides quantitative processes/data analysis and prepares documentation for senior management and faculty administrators which explain data sources, trends, and comparisons related to strategic research performance indicators.
- Design: Designs complete solutions to complex business problems applicable in a wide array of University operations using specialized technologies unique to the world of business intelligence, including conceptual and logical data models for the data warehouse environment, static and dynamic reporting tools and data visualization techniques. Reporting and Data Quality Assurance: Ensures successful delivery of reporting as required by executives and managers to serve operational and strategic management of research. Ensures data quality and integrity, and designs reports that help users gain insights and make fact-based business decisions.
- Continuous improvement: Promotes innovation and continuous improvement. Continually seeks optimal business intelligence processes and performance. Works with managers and leadership to support cultural change and position the organization for long-term success by helping to improve or build high performing processes. Stays abreast of new technology, work methods, and techniques associated with all aspects of computing. Proactively researches technologies and tools that are of potential interest to the University and makes recommendations to management.
- Risk Assessment: Anticipates risks and issues in plans and requirements and takes appropriate action to mitigate and resolve them. Oversees the smooth transition of all system enhancements into the daily operations of users.
- Project management: Establishes project steps, milestones and timetables including analyzing and estimating feasibility, time and compatibility with application and other programs in order to ensure completion within the established timeframe. For this purpose, the incumbent works in close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams consisting of business owners and stakeholders.
- Development and Testing: Collaborates with IT services and external vendors to develop and implement business intelligence projects and complex programs including business needs assessment, scoping solutions, identifying data sources and business rules, evaluating the technical and operational feasibility of solutions proposed and performs integration tests to ensure correct functionality of solution. Evaluates and diagnoses the impact of proposed solutions on existing systems, ensuring their coherence with those already in place.
- Maintenance and Enhancement: Manages all activities related to the maintenance and enhancement of the Awards Management Systems to ensure overall systems’ accessibility and stability and to improve researchers’ and research administrators’ user experience in collaboration with internal IT services and external vendors.
- Documentation: Writes project proposals, develops business requirements, data dictionaries, technical and business process documentation and ensures these are accessible and readily available to clients, stakeholders and business owners.
What you will bring:
- A master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or related field, preferably with a strong research background or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in business intelligence/analytics including significant experience with BI Tools.
- Knowledge of post-secondary institution operational priorities, business processes and management systems that are used by the University and/or the designated client group.
- Knowledge of policies, guidelines and granting/contracting practices of federal and provincial funding agencies and departments, as well as granting foundations.
- Demonstrated experience delivering strategic recommendations and developing research performance metrics.
- Demonstrated understanding of BI architect concepts, including modeling and technology selection and implementation as well as data warehouse.
- Demonstrated experience in project planning, risk analysis and project management.
- Demonstrated capacity to provide high-level analyses in complex situations.
- Exercise foresight, tact and diplomacy when interacting with University senior administrators and key stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and research abilities, critical thinking and attention to detail.
- Bilingualism – English and French (spoken and written) is preferred, mastery of one of the official languages is required.
