Nature of work:

The proposed research aims to develop and implement novel prediction and optimization models to improve operating room (OR) efficiency for cardiac care. The study will be conducted in close collaboration with knowledge users to ensure clinical relevancy. These models will specifically improve the prediction of surgical procedure durations, which will subsequently be incorporated into OR scheduling optimization models to improve OR efficiency. The proposed models will allow for the automation of OR schedules that minimize overtime costs as well as patient wait times. These models will also explore novel approaches to OR scheduling, including holistically accounting for OR resource availability, postoperative surgical patient flow, and surgical uncertainties.

Minimum qualifications:

Strong Programming Skills (Python), Strong Operations Research Skillsets (MIP, Optimization under uncertainty), Experience with Machine Learning, Prior experience with scheduling optimization is desired.
