$98,138.00 - $121,799.00The BHI is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary research program aimed at accelerating prevention, detection, treatment and care of brain-heart disorders. The BHI program is led by the University of Ottawa, University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and Brain and Mind Research Institute (uOBMRI) in collaboration with partner organizations in Canada and internationally.

Position Purpose

Reporting to and working closely with the Senior Director, the Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for BHI research funding programs. The Manager oversees the development and implementation of all BHI calls for proposals, including managing the peer review and strategic selection process for all BHI-funded projects. In addition, the Manager, Programs and Operations oversees the development and implementation of the BHI training strategy and the monitoring and reporting on BHI research activities.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and implement funding programs for capacity building, partnership development, research and knowledge mobilization to advance the BHI Scientific Strategy and Implementation Plan.

  • Manage the adjudication process associated with all funding programs, including but not limited to the development of evaluation criteria, peer reviewer recruitment and training, relevance review to ensure alignment to BHI objectives and developing briefing materials and recommendations for the appropriate governance committees.

  • In collaboration with the Manager, Partnerships, negotiate the participation of internal and external partners in BHI funding programs, and BHI participation in programs led by partner organizations.

  • Prepares decision letters, notices of allowance and terms and conditions of funding that outline the requirements of researchers and institutions and ensures the administration of funding according to all policies of research funder and uOttawa.

  • Provide oversight and guide the monitoring and reporting on the full range of BHI research funding initiatives to governance committees, partners and funders.

  • Support BHI processes for monitoring research activities including the annual review of progress towards milestones and deliverables by BHI governance committees.

  • Collaborate with the scientific lead for training and mentoring and other leaders within BHI to develop and implement a multi-year action plan to build capacity for brain-heart research within uOttawa and partner institutions.

  • Continually improve and adapt funding program processes and policies to best meet BHI objectives, including researching and implementing best practices in research (i.e., SGBA+, open access, data sharing), peer review (i.e., DORA), funding program management and reporting.

What you will bring:

  • Master degree in life sciences, health professions, management or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD would be considered an asset.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a related field.

  • Knowledge and experience of project management practices.

  • Knowledge and experience in policies and practices related to research and/or research funding administration, normally acquired through hands-on experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of University policies, procedures and management systems.

  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian and international funding agencies, and their policies, priorities, programs and processes.

  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational and administrative skills with strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize and delegate.

  • Experience in liaising and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders including governance committees, researchers, funding agencies, partners and colleagues across different units and divisions.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop clear and concise written material (e.g., briefing notes, discussion papers, guidelines) and presentations tailored appropriately to different audiences. Ability to clearly deliver information presentations or information to different audiences.

  • Experience in human resource and financial management.

  • Excellent skills in using technology including spreadsheets, databases, financial systems and MS Office 365 suite of programs.

  • Bilingualism (English and French)
