About Tantalus Systems (TSX: GRID)

Tantalus is a technology company dedicated to helping utilities modernize their distribution grids by harnessing the power of data across all their devices and systems deployed throughout the entire distribution grid – from the substation to the EV charger located behind the meter. We offer smart grid solutions across multiple levels: intelligent connected devices, communications networks, data management, enterprise applications and analytics. Learn more at http://www.tantalus.com/.

Come join us if you’re interested in being part of an entrepreneurial team, solving complex technical problems and delivering innovative solutions that will directly impact the electrification of everything and the decarbonization of our society.

We have operations throughout the United States and Canada with offices in Burnaby (British Columbia, Canada), Raleigh (North Carolina, USA), and Norwalk (Connecticut, USA).

This position offers a competitive salary plus variable compensation based on performance targets and business objectives. Tantalus also offers generous benefits, including medical, dental and vision plans, healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts and paid time off.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Vice President, Product Development, the UX Designer is responsible for designing intuitive, data-rich interfaces for smart grid platforms used by electric utilities in the United States, spanning AMI, asset analytics (e.g., transformer health, phase identification), and RF/cellular network health.

Location of Position:

This is a hybrid role based in our Burnaby, BC office.

Specifically, the UX Designer will:

  • Lead user research with utility control room operators, planners, analysts, and field technicians to understand how they engage with AMI, asset, and network data, producing personas, workflows, and journey maps.
  • Design wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity UI for web (and optionally mobile) that unify SCADA views, Load Management, Analytics, and AMI applications into coherent workflows, with clear paths from high-level status to detailed investigation.
  • Define and refine data-centric visualizations for:
    • AMI (usage patterns, outages/restoration, tamper and exception conditions).
    • Transformer and asset health (time-series trends, condition indicators, risk or priority views).
    • Phase identification and load balancing (map and tabular views that clarify phase assignments and imbalances).
    • RF and cellular network health (coverage, performance, and reliability metrics), ensuring complex information is presented in a clear, uncluttered way without over-reliance on decorative widgets.
  • Collaborate closely with product management, engineering, and data/analytics teams to translate requirements and models into usable workflows, capturing constraints such as real-time data needs, alarm priorities, and regulatory expectations.
  • Plan and run usability tests, heuristic evaluations, and feedback sessions with utility users; iterate designs based on findings, focusing on outcomes such as reduced time to diagnose issues, fewer operator errors, and higher adoption of new analytics features.
  • Document interaction patterns, UX guidelines, and design systems to ensure consistency across AMI, analytics, and networking modules in a multi-application platform.

What You Bring:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, Human Factors, or a related field, and 4+ years of UX experience in SaaS/B2B or enterprise software with complex, data-heavy workflows.
  • Strong skills in user-centered design: user research, information architecture, interaction design, and usability testing, with a portfolio demonstrating complex dashboard or analytics work.
  • Proficiency with modern UX tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Miro) for creating and communicating flows, prototypes, and design specifications.
  • Experience designing interfaces for time-series and geospatial data (maps, timelines, multi-asset lists), especially in industrial, IoT, or operations environments where reliability and clarity are critical.
  • Solid understanding of accessibility and responsive design principles (e.g., WCAG) to support diverse users and viewing contexts in utility operations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with utility, energy, or industrial control domains (e.g., AMI systems, grid operations, SCADA/HMI, asset management, or network operations centers).
  • Familiarity (conceptual, not implementation-level) with how protocols and systems such as DNP3, Modbus, RF mesh, and cellular backhaul influence data latency, reliability, and alarm behavior, sufficient to design for real-time and near-real-time use cases; deep protocol expertise is not required.
  • Experience collaborating on or visualizing advanced analytics or predictive models (e.g., transformer condition scores, anomaly detection, phase identification from AMI data), including working with data scientists or power engineers.
  • Comfort using product analytics tools (e.g., Mixpanel, GA, or similar) to understand how users interact with dashboards and to inform iterative UX improvements.

If you possess some of the key skills and experiences outlined in the job posting and are genuinely interested in the position, we invite you to take a chance and submit your application. We value diverse perspectives, unique skills, and believe in the power of potential over specific qualifications.
