This position offers a competitive salary plus variable compensation based on performance targets and business objectives. Tantalus also offers generous benefits, including medical, dental and vision plans, healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts and paid time off.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Vice President, Product Development, the Senior Cloud Architect will lead the modernization of a portfolio of VM-based enterprise applications into a unified, cloud-oriented platform that combines VMs, containers, FaaS/serverless, and a modern data layer optimized for time-series workloads (including migration from Oracle to PostgreSQL), with clear KPIs for performance, stability, and availability.

The Senior Cloud Architect defines the target cloud architecture and roadmap to evolve from fragmented, VM-centric applications and Oracle databases to a cohesive platform built on modern cloud services, PostgreSQL-based data stores, and well-defined service-level objectives. The role partners with product, engineering, security, and operations to design, govern, and guide implementation of a resilient, secure, observable, and cost‑efficient cloud platform.

Location of Position:

This is a hybrid role based in our Burnaby, BC office.

Specifically, the Senior Cloud Architect will:

  • Assess the current application, integration, and infrastructure landscape (VMs, Oracle databases, data flows) and define a target-state architecture and phased modernization roadmap (rehost, replatform, refactor, consolidate).
  • Design a hybrid cloud platform that supports VMs, containers, and FaaS/serverless, including:
    • Container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes/EKS/AKS/GKE or equivalent).
    • Serverless/FaaS for event-driven workloads (e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions).
    • Core cloud services for networking, storage, identity, observability, and security.
  • Define patterns and standards for containerization and serverless: image baselines, configuration and secret management, service discovery, event-driven integration (queues, streams, event buses, storage triggers), and clear guidance on when to use containers vs FaaS vs VMs.
  • Lead application modernization initiatives, working with teams to decompose or repackage legacy VM workloads into containerized services or serverless functions where it adds clear value for scalability, resiliency, or cost.
  • Modernize the data layer by planning and executing migration of core transactional and time-series workloads from Oracle to PostgreSQL or managed PostgreSQL services, ensuring performance, reliability, and manageable cutovers.
  • Design data architectures optimized for time-series data (e.g., PostgreSQL with extensions such as TimescaleDB or similar), including ingestion, retention, partitioning, downsampling, and analytics for AMI, transformer, and network telemetry.
  • Define and oversee database migration strategies (schema conversion, ETL/ELT pipelines, dual-write/read phases, validation, cutover, and rollback) for Oracle → PostgreSQL in close collaboration with application and analytics teams.
  • Define service-level objectives (SLOs), SLIs, and KPIs for performance, stability, and availability across platform services and customer-facing applications (e.g., latency, error rates, uptime, throughput, time-to-recover).
  • Architect for high availability and resilience (multi-AZ/region patterns, graceful degradation, rate limiting, backpressure, retries, and DR strategies) so the platform can consistently meet defined SLOs and error budgets.
  • Work with SRE/operations teams to implement monitoring, alerting, and dashboards aligned to these KPIs, and use the metrics to drive capacity planning, performance tuning, and reduction of incidents over time.
  • Establish and enforce cloud governance and security baselines, including IAM/RBAC models, network segmentation, encryption, backup/DR, and compliance-aligned configurations.
  • Collaborate with DevOps/SRE/platform engineering teams to implement infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation/Bicep), CI/CD pipelines, and observability (logging, metrics, tracing) for VM, container, and FaaS workloads.
  • Optimize cloud cost and performance through right-sizing, autoscaling strategies, use of managed services, and lifecycle policies, with clear KPIs for platform efficiency.
  • Produce and maintain architectural documentation, reference diagrams, and standards; communicate trade-offs and decisions effectively to technical and business stakeholders.

What You Bring:

Education and Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience designing and implementing cloud architectures for enterprise applications, including deep experience with at least one major public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Proven experience leading application modernization or cloud migration programs, including consolidation of multiple applications into shared, platform-style architectures.
  • Strong understanding of cloud networking, security, identity, and data architectures (VPC/VNet design, IAM/RBAC, encryption and key management, messaging/streaming, data stores).
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code and CI/CD, and working closely with DevOps/SRE/platform teams to operate production workloads.
  • Experience designing and operating containerized workloads (Docker plus Kubernetes or equivalent) and integrating them into cloud-native ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with serverless/FaaS and event-driven patterns, including when to apply them vs long-running services, and how to integrate them with APIs, queues, and streaming platforms.
  • Experience with relational databases and practical exposure to PostgreSQL in production environments.
  • Strong communication skills to translate business goals into architectural blueprints and influence cross-functional teams.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in utilities, energy, or other regulated/mission-critical industries, with awareness of reliability, compliance, and data residency requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience leading database modernization projects, including Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migrations and adoption of PostgreSQL-based solutions for time-series or IoT data.
  • Experience defining and implementing reliability and performance KPIs/SLOs (including error budgets) and using them to guide architectural choices and trade-offs between speed and stability.
  • Background in platform engineering or internal developer platforms, building reusable shared services and self-service capabilities for product teams.
  • Exposure to observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, vendor APM tools) and cost-management practices for container and serverless environments.
  • Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
