Are you curious about how things work? Do you enjoy building, testing, problem‑solving, or getting hands‑on with real engineering projects?

If you're enthusiastic, eager to learn, and excited by the idea of developing engineering solutions that helps support national security, this could be the perfect start to your career.

At Secure Systems and Technologies, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers designing and developing real products used in demanding environments. This is your chance to learn both mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering skills while earning nationally recognised Level 2/3 qualifications – all while contributing to genuinely impactful work.

Why Join SST as an Apprentice?

You will gain hands-on experience across the full engineering lifecycle, rotating through key business areas to build a deep understanding of how RF-sensitive, TEMPEST-compliant and precision electromechanical products are designed, manufactured and tested. You will develop core mechanical, electrical and design skills, including proficiency in SolidWorks, practical assembly, prototype development, and engineering documentation. Working in a fast-moving, dynamic environment, you will be supported through a Level 2–3 Mechatronics apprenticeship, with the aim of progressing into a fully capable Electromechanical Design Engineer within the engineering team.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Complete structured rotations through Design/Engineering, Procurement, TEMPEST, Production and QHSE to gain broad business exposure.
  • Participate actively in each department, learning its processes, tools, priorities and contribution to product delivery.
  • Build a strong understanding of RF, shielding and TEMPEST requirements that influence the engineering design process.
  • Learn to create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks, supporting senior designers with product and component design work.
  • Assist with the design and development of electromechanical assemblies, housings, fixtures and prototypes.
  • Support engineering calculations, tolerance analysis and design-for-manufacture activities under guidance.
  • Help maintain drawing packs, product documentation and controlled engineering records.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly tasks, including fitting, wiring, cable routing and basic testing.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, crimpers, inspection equipment and electrical test and fault-finding equipment safely and correctly.
  • Support prototype builds and provide build feedback to improve manufacturability and reliability.
  • Assist with in-house CNC milling and 3D printing for prototype parts, jigs or fixtures (training provided).
  • Use Business Central ERP to create and update Bills of Materials, part numbers, routings and associated data.
  • Contribute to Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), deviations, concessions and document updates.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities aimed at reducing waste, improving designs/build quality or enhancing workflow efficiency.
  • Support TEMPEST and RF-shielding departments with basic testing, preparation of units, and documentation tasks.
  • Learn and follow security, compliance and configuration-control requirements associated with defence products.
  • Maintain a safe, organised working environment at all times in line with company QHSE policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, responsibility and a positive attitude toward learning and development.
