Our Wendell, NC headquarters for Siemens Electrification & Automation delivers energy distribution systems and solutions nationwide. We power today’s grids and invest in future grid innovations. We’re seeking experienced engineers in power transmission and distribution, specializing in substation automation and protection relay engineering, to join our Power Systems Engineering team.

We are looking for Senior Power Systems Automation Engineers. This position will be based in Wendell, NC.

You’ll make a difference by:

  • Designing, configuring and testing automation and control systems for complex power systems and substations, ensuring high reliability and system integrity.
  • Conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)—skilled in preparing comprehensive test procedures, commissioning scripts, and leading successful project delivery.
  • Developing new applications using relevant communication protocols in the power automation industry such as IEC 61850, MODBUS, DNP3.
  • Developing and creating control logic diagrams, network architectures, signal lists, and functional design documents for protection and control schemes.
  • Being a proactive technical leader and collaborator, trusted to guide project teams, solve complex challenges, and drive results across all phases of the project lifecycle—from initial design to final commissioning.
  • Serving as the primary technical partner with clients, providing on-site support, troubleshooting, and commissioning expertise with a focus on performance and customer satisfaction.

You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics/Computer Science Engineering.
  • 6 or more years of engineering experience in power automation for electrical substations.
  • Project Technical Lead experience.
  • Experience producing technical documentation for Protection and Control systems for Substations such as Logic Diagrams, Sequences of Operations, FDS, and test procedures.
  • Ability to read and fully understand DC and AC schematics, three- and one-line diagrams for Medium and/or High Voltage substations systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one of the relay products and associated software from vendors such as Siemens, GE, SEL or ABB
  • Experience with Communication Network Technologies, including Design and hardware configuration.
  • Experience implementing communication protocols such as IEC61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SMV), MODBUS, IEC60870-5-101/103/104, in protection relays.
  • Substation automation commissioning experience.
  • Experience in Factory and Site testing of automation and control systems .
  • Flexibility with 50% to 75% travel is expected depending on project assignments and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applied knowledge in communication networks, including design, configuration, and troubleshooting of layer 2 and layer 3 capable devices for protection and automation applications.
  • Advanced knowledge in Siemens Power Automation products such as SICAM PAS, SICAM A8000, SICAM SCC.
  • Experience with Power Automation engineering tools such as SICAM Device Manager, SICAM Toolbox, SIMATIC WinCC
  • Advanced knowledge in Siemens Industry Automation products such as SIMATIC PLC, TIA Portal, WinCC Advanced/Professional/Unified.
  • Advanced Programming skills and experience with programming languages used in process and power automation such as C++, ST, LD, FBD, SFC, CFC.

The pay range for this position is $83,966 - $143,942 annually with a target incentive of 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
