Job Profile-Relay Engineer
Essential Skills & Tools
Technical Expertise
• Comprehensive Relay Knowledge:
Proficient in handling a wide range of protective relays, including electromechanical, solid-state, and advanced microprocessor-based relays from major OEMs such as SIEMENS, ABB, GE, and others. Skilled in interpreting relay settings, troubleshooting logic, and optimizing schemes for enhanced system reliability.
• Relay Testing & Commissioning:
Hands-on expertise with secondary injection test sets, primary injection testing, relay configuration software, and fault recording/analysis tools. Experienced in commissioning of feeder, transformer, busbar, line, and motor protection systems in substation environments (AIS/GIS).
• Engineering Software & System Standards:
Proficient in industry-leading tools like CAPE and ASPEN for relay coordination studies, AutoCAD for engineering drawings, and SCADA/DCS system integration for control & monitoring.
Well-versed in IEC 61850 protocols, GOOSE messaging, and substation automation architectures.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
• Protection Coordination & Logic Review:
Conducts detailed relay coordination, load flow assessment, grading margin checks, and verification of protection logic diagrams to ensure system stability and selectivity.
• Fault Analysis & System Evaluation:
Strong understanding of transient behavior, short-circuit analysis, event/fault waveform interpretation, and root-cause identification for system disturbances. Able to assess risk, propose mitigation measures, and implement corrective actions aligned with industry standards.
• Technical Decision-Making:
Ability to evaluate complex protection scenarios, foresee potential system vulnerabilities, and recommend design or setting improvements to reduce downtime and enhance safety.
Soft Skills
• Communication & Reporting:
Capable of preparing clear and comprehensive technical reports, commissioning documents, relay test sheets, event analysis reports, and client presentations. Comfortable interacting with clients, OEMs, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Time & Quality Management:
Strong focus on accuracy, quality control, and timely delivery of engineering outputs. Effectively manages multiple assignments without compromising on technical rigor.
• Teamwork & Leadership:
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with project teams, support field personnel, guide junior engineers, and work efficiently under high-pressure project timelines.
Qualifications & Experience
• Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree/Diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field. A postgraduate qualification is considered an added advantage.
• Professional Experience:
2–5+ years of experience in protective relaying, substation engineering, testing & commissioning, or power system studies. Experience with HV/MV substations, transmission & distribution networks, and utility or EPC projects is highly valued.
• Certifications & Standards Knowledge:
Strong working knowledge of NERC, IEEE, IEC, and utility protection standards.
Industry Exposure:
Experience coordinating with utilities, consultants, and project stakeholders; exposure to site commissioning, documentation, audits, and testing protocols.
