We are looking for System Manager / Architect – Loco Kavach (Onboard ATP System)
The Onboard ATP System Manager / System Architect will be responsible for leading the design, architecture, and lifecycle management of the Onboard Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. This role involves defining system-level requirements, ensuring compliance with national and international railway safety standards, integrating the onboard system with trackside infrastructure, and overseeing technical delivery from concept through deployment.
The role requires a strong blend of technical expertise, system engineering skills, and stakeholder coordination abilities, with a focus on delivering a safety-critical system compliant with SIL-4 standards.
You’ll make a difference by
- System Architecture & Design: Define, develop, and maintain System Requirements Specifications (SRS) the system architecture for the Onboard Kavach ATP system, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and safety.
- Identify reusable components from existing ATP or ETCS platforms (e.g., TCC, ECC) and adapt them for Kavach requirements.
- Develop and manage Interface Control Documents (ICDs) ensuring seamless subsystem integration.
- Ensure seamless integration between Onboard ATP and Trackside (Kavach) subsystems, including interoperability with other vendors’ systems.
- Apply systems thinking to optimize complex embedded safety-critical systems.
- Ensure compliance with SIL4 safety standards (EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, EN 50159).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, software, safety, and validation.
- Engage with customers, certification bodies, and railway operators to align system design with expectations.
- Requirements Management: Capture, analyse, and validate customer, regulatory, and operational requirements for the onboard ATP system.
- Ensure compliance with relevant CENELEC EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, and Indian Railway standards for ATP systems.
- Manage requirements traceability throughout the system lifecycle.
- Safety & Compliance:Drive the system design towards achieving SIL-4 safety integrity level.
- Collaborate with safety teams, assess hazards, and define safety mitigation strategies.
- Support independent safety assessments (ISA) and type approval processes with Indian Railways and RDSO.
- Technical Leadership: Serve as the primary technical authority for the onboard ATP system, guiding the engineering team in system design and implementation.
- Provide technical inputs for procurement, supplier evaluation, and component qualification.
- Lead design reviews, technical audits, and architecture workshops.
- Evaluate and recommend platforms, tools, and emerging technologies.
- Integration, Testing & Commissioning: Oversee integration of onboard subsystems (e.g., Vital Computer, Brake Interface Unit, Driver Machine Interface, Train Interface Units).
- Define and supervise system-level verification & validation (V&V) plans, including lab testing, field trials, and operational acceptance tests.
- Coordinate with Rolling Stock teams for equipment installation and interface validation.
- 6. Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with Indian Railways, RDSO, vendors, and internal teams to ensure alignment on technical specifications and project milestones.
- Provide regular progress updates to project and program management teams.
- Manage technical risks, issues, and change requests effectively.
Desired Skills:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or Railway Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum 15+ years in railway signalling, ATP, or train control systems, with at least 5 years in system architecture or system management roles.
- Hands-on experience with ETCS, CBTC, or other ATP systems.
- Proven track record of delivering safety-critical SIL-4 systems.
- Deep knowledge of ATP system components, onboard hardware & software architecture.
- Expertise in EN 50126/50128/50129 standards and functional safety lifecycle.
- Familiarity with RAMS, FMECA, hazard analysis, and safety case preparation.
- Experience with train-to-trackside communication protocols and onboard equipment integration.
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage cross-functional teams and multiple stakeholders.
- Possess interpersonal and soft skills, essential for effective teamwork e.g. communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, adaptability, cross functional / organizational and intercultural collaboration.
- Fluent in English both orally and written for communication with different stakeholders
- Independent and has a structured work approach.
