Siemens Mobility Limited, Rail Infrastructure (SMO RI), is the leading train control, communications and electrification technology provider in the UK and delivers a significant contribution to the global technology portfolio for Siemens Mobility and the wider rail industry as part of the Siemens global One Technology Company.
Reporting to the SMO RI Managing Director the Director of Technology (DoT) will be responsible for overseeing all technology aspects of the company and leading on technology governance. This role will work with executive management to grow the company through the use of technological resources. Using an active and practical approach, the DoT will direct all employees in domain technology, including train control, electrification and communications, as well as leadership oversight of Information Technology, digitalisation and innovation. The Director of Technology will develop and own the company’s technology strategic goals established in the company’s strategic plan to achieve our Vision of Creating the Connected Railway by:
- Enhancing today, with solutions for a Digital and Cloud based tomorrow
- Connecting train and track systems with passenger and freight users for a fully intermodal future
- Building data analytics solutions from connected assets to enhance performance for our customer
- Developing technology to deliver efficiencies that maximise infrastructure improvements
In addition you will be responsible for all technology governance, including Cyber Security, Engineering Assurance and Product Safety.
As the new executive, you will be a strategic leader, who can build on the existing technology and business strategy to maintain technology as a critical component to the SMO RI strategy.

- Driving an ambitious and futuristic vision, strategy, objectives and targets maintaining SMO RI as the market-leader for technology in the UK Rail industry
- Serving as the senior technology thought leader for SMO RI, leading on relevant new technologies, trends and industry developments and collaborating with all internal and external (customers, partners, regulators, industry bodies, global Mobility) stakeholders to develop and implement the SMO RI Technology Strategy and roadmaps to meet business objectives
- Leading a multi-channel, matrixed Product and Solutions and UK Research and Development (R&D) organisation, setting vision and gaining support, prioritising according to business goals, developing and implementing execution plans, budget management and accountability, whilst maintaining an entrepreneurial approach and responding with agility to changing business priorities
- Leading on technology innovation providing thought leadership and technology expertise.
- Ensuring UK industry requirements are fully represented in the Mobility global technology strategy, promoting UK technology and the capabilities of UK R&D as a leading provider of products and solutions for Mobility globally
- Being recognised as an industry technology expert, representing SMO RI Technology at senior level with customers, internal stakeholders, including other Mobility Business Units, and industry bodies including ORR, RSSB and RIA
- Leading, motivating and developing a superior team, building talent, coaching, delegating appropriately, conflict resolution and effective problem solving

- Having board level responsibility for developing and driving ambitious and innovative Technology Strategies across multiple functions, in line with customer, industry and internal stakeholder current and future demands
- Deep understanding of digital product development, cloud technology, cyber security and the use of data analytics to develop value add customer solutions
- Driving new thinking and ways of working in a traditional SIL2-4 product and solutions development and organisation, including the use of digital technologies (AI, machine learning, robotics etc.) to deliver efficiencies in Technology design, development and implementation, whilst ensuring safety and governance
- Strong leadership and management skills with proven experience of directing, developing and motivating large complex teams, delegating appropriately, conflict resolution and effective problem solving
- Commercial acumen, budget management and accountability for delivering technology solutions to meet business and customer objectives
- Solid relationship building skills with the ability to develop external partnerships and engage multi-channel stakeholders
