We are hiring for a Senior Systems Engineer for the Rail Infrastructure (RI) R&D team in the domain of large, complex back-office software systems. The position involves specifying, managing, and communicating the technical requirements for several large back-office software systems (such as a dispatching system and movement planner). Key responsibilities of the position include: delivering quality technical requirements to the development team; ensuring the requirements satisfy customer goals, desired system functionality, and objectives; analyzing system-level technical documents (e.g., ICDs) as sources of requirements; alignment to regulatory (e.g., FRA) requirements and standards; capturing requirements in multiple formats (e.g., individual written requirements, tabular format); providing additional requirements modeling artifacts to improve clarity (e.g., UML sequence and activity diagrams); creating and maintaining the trace links between requirements and other project artifacts (e.g., design); implementing requirements standard methodologies in the project process, and; the collection and reporting of requirement metrics.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Develops the detailed, specific, technical requirements for large-scale complex back-office software systems.
- Manages technical requirements consistently across all back-office projects. Requirements are managed in a requirements management tool (Polarion) and candidate needs to ensure that the requirements are properly traced to various technical artifacts (e.g., design, test, RAMS).
- Supports the UX experts in the user interface design process and documentation.
- Supports project management in the change and scope management processes.
- Displays a high level of critical thinking in bringing successful resolution to high-impact, sophisticated, and/or multi-functional problems within the rail back-office systems domain.
- Demonstrates and applies extensive knowledge of railroad operations to the successful definition of complex back-office systems topics.
To thrive in this role, you have:
Qualified applicants will have 5-8 years of successful experience in a directly related field and successful demonstration of Key Responsibilities and Knowledge as presented above.
- BS in Engineering or Computer Science - Electrical Engineering preferred
- Advanced Degree preferred, Masters, PhD, or MBA
- Technical knowledge of operations concepts in rail industry, rail products, dispatch systems and other Back office rail systems
- Strong experience in systems design of PTC products for North American Class-1 Freight Railroads
- Competency with requirements management tools, preferably Polarion or DOORS
- Knowledgeable in standards, process, and methods for Requirements Engineering
- Experience with safety and security critical systems
- Customer focused approach
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with others in person and off-site.
- Strong technical analysis skills
- Excellent technical writing skills

The base salary range for this position in Munhall, PA is $122,100 - $164,800. The salary may be higher or lower depending on the budget and the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, and qualifications. The annual incentive target is 10% of the base salary.
