What’s the role
Shell Canada is seeking a strategic and execution focused Category Manager, Fresh Food. Leading and managing this growing category is one of the most critical roles within Shell Mobility & Convenience to deliver the expected significant growth in Food & Beverage. The Fresh Food Category Manager is accountable for the end‑to‑end performance of the fresh food category across the convenience retail network. This role owns category strategy, range, pricing, promotions, food safety compliance, and in‑store execution, ensuring the offer is simple to operate, safe, profitable, and compelling for customers on‑the‑go and ultimately delivering significant sales and margin growth.
This role targets the categories of Fresh Food and Perishables. It will work alongside a dynamic and professional team of colleagues across Category Management, Store Format, Marketing, and Network Development, while also collaborating closely with Contracting and Procurement, the Sales and Operations organization, and key global and local stakeholders to leverage learnings and drive profitable growth for the portfolio.
In addition, this role currently offers a hybrid schedule with the ability to work remotely 2 days per week, and the other 3 days per week from the Calgary – Shell Bow Building.
Accountabilities:

Category Strategy & Growth
Support, own and execute the fresh food category strategy for convenience retail, aligning range, pricing, promotions, and in store execution to customer missions such as breakfast, lunch, snacking, and evening trade

Commercial Performance Management
Develop and manage annual category plans including promotional calendars and innovation pipeline Analyze category performance, consumer trends, and external competitive insights to drive sales, margin, and cash contribution through effective pricing, promotional mechanics, portion sizes, and sales windows, with a strong focus on minimizing waste and markdowns
Deliver against key financial KPIs including sales, gross margin, shrink, waste and labor productivity

Team Leadership & Capability Building
Provide leadership and direction to the fresh food category team, fostering clear accountability, strong collaboration, and continuous capability development to ensure category plans are delivered effectively and consistently across the convenience network

Food Safety & License to Operate
Act as the category owner for food safety and compliance, ensuring all fresh food products and processes meet regulatory, brand, and internal standards (e.g., HACCP, handling, storage, preparation, and display)

Operational Excellence & In‑Store Execution Standards
Develop and maintain clear operational standards, playbooks and processes to ensure effective roll out and execution of category programs at store level. (e.g. execution standards for merchandising, minimum credible display, equipment usage, and time‑of‑day execution)
Identify and remove operational barriers impacting store execution, food safety or profitability

Retailer & Field Team Enablement
Equip territory managers and retailers with clear tools, guides, training materials, and playbooks to support consistent execution, active selling, and confident operation of the fresh food offer

Cross Functional Leadership
Act as the central point of contact for Fresh Food Category within the Mobility Organization and prepare and present category updates, performance reviews and recommendations to senior leadership collaborate closely with operations, marketing, HSSE, Contracts and Procurement, and field teams to deliver a safe, simple, and profitable fresh food proposition across the business. Influence stakeholders without direct authority in a matrix environment
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Hospitality, or a related field. An MBA is considered an asset
At least 5 years of proven experience in foodservice, ideally within grocery, convenience retail, quick serve restaurant (QSR) or multi-unit food operations
Proven experience managing national or large-scale categories across a multi-location retail network experience is a strong asset
Solid understanding of food safety, regulatory requirements and operational realities of fresh food programs
Strong commercial acumen with demonstrated success driving sales and margin growth, and reduction in waste
Ability to translate strategy into simple, executable store standards
Experience working with complex supplier networks and contract negotiations
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills across suppliers, operations, and field teams
Advanced analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
Must be willing to travel across Canada up to 30% of the time
