What’s the role
Shell is seeking a Journeyman Instrumentation Technician to join its team in Fort St. John. This role is part of the craft technician team responsible for equipment maintenance, calibration, and record‑keeping for measurement and instrumentation equipment, in compliance with all applicable internal requirements and external regulations.
The Journeyman Instrumentation Technician is responsible for installing and maintaining instrumentation equipment in a professional, safe, and cost-effective manner. The technician will maintain a safe work environment by ensuring all work is completed in accordance with Shell’s work practices, health and safety guidelines, and environmental standards.
In addition, this role will be responsible for the configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of systems, as well as the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of pneumatic and electronic controls and equipment. All installation, repair, and maintenance activities must be completed in strict compliance with Shell Canada policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable legislation.
Accountabilities
Execute, and document regulatory inspections, preventive maintenance, and reactive/breakdown maintenance on a wide range of instrumentation and electrical equipment in accordance with Maintenance manual and manufacturer’s specifications. Identify and assist in repair and troubleshooting, calibration, loss/gain analysis, problem solving, and accurate recordkeeping. Follow Process Control Domain (PCD) processes. Interpret and understand equipment, station, and protective and control devices (P&CD) drawings; use knowledge to serve as expert on the equipment parameters, flow rates, pressure ratings
Identify specific process improvement needs and provides recommendations for system upgrades and streamlining
Perform all work in a safe manner in adherence with Goal Zero
Work closely with technical support staff, engineering staff, operations staff, and other stakeholders to maintain system reliability and availability. Work with Maintenance Team to own and organize assigned jobs through determining material and equipment needed, scheduling downtime, and arranging for outside contractors and special items needed. Collaborate across teams as needed. The individual may also partner with Shell Project Teams on specific initiatives and support Management of Change (MOC) process and procedures
Complete and stay in compliance with required Federal, Provincial, and Local regulations; Operator Qualification; HSSE training and standards; and other required applicable regulations
Monitor equipment performance trends to identify potential reliability and/or equipment issues that could impact Operations; develop recommendations to address. Follow practices and procedures to support continuous improvement of maintenance programs and tasks
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Must be a certified Journeyman Instrumentation technician
At least 5 years relevant experience
Prior liquid or gas measurement experience, and/or electrical/instrumentation systems installation and maintenance experience is required
Must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully complete a driver’s background check/drivers abstract through Fleet Services or upon request. Must also maintain driving privileges when assigned a company vehicle and participate in the inVehicle Monitoring System
Proficient at working within the Maintenance Execution process and SAP software
Proficient at working on a computer, using standard operating programs, and entering information into systems
Preferred Qualifications
Experience demonstrating safe work practices and compliance in a hazardous work environment
Knowledge of OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices
Strong understanding of station PLC logic and instrument protective functions on pipeline systems
Experience in failure analysis and equipment reliability
Ability to navigate and query reports in SAP, SOU, and other software
Experience in procurement and work scheduling
Experience in conducting Job Hazard Analysis
Experience in obtaining and issuing Work Permits
Experience in applying Lockout/Tag Out
Proficient in planning, coordinating, and executing work plans and preventative and reactive maintenance programs

The hourly rate range for this role is $48.79 - $59.26. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
