JOB PURPOSE:

We are looking for an experienced Optoelectronic Engineer to join the multidisciplinary development team to support the design and development of advanced optical components, modules and sub-systems to meet our customers’ needs, in diverse market applications including Communications, Medical, Industrial and Automotive sectors. The position involves both leading and supporting projects from concept definition, detailed design, process and test development, prototyping and qualification phases, through to implementation into manufacturing.

NATURE OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work within a multidisciplinary development team to provide design solutions on optoelectronic /optical/photonic products to meet customer specifications. Development activities include, but are not limited to:
    • Telecom/datacom components/modules/subsystems (lasers, detectors, modulators, receivers, amplifiers, transceivers, etc).
    • Sensing / LiDAR optical components/systems.
    • Medical, biomedical, military optoelectronic components.
  • Define design concepts and select key optical and microelectronic technologies and integration strategies that align with project requirements.
  • Design optical components and interconnects with consideration for all design elements (packaging, integration, optical and RF/electrical, mechanical, thermal, assembly, test and reliability).
  • Define and develop advanced packaging and integration solutions for compact, efficient and high performance optoelectronic and microelectronic products.
  • Perform optical modeling, including free space and guided wave, and optical system performance simulations.
  • Perform optical and optomechanical tolerance analysis to assess practical performance capability. Work with thermal-structural engineering to assess impact on optical performance.
  • Select and characterize active and passive optical components for high speed optoelectronic systems or subsystems.
  • Define specifications/requirements for outsourced custom components and coordinate/interface with manufacturers/suppliers.
  • Work closely with optical assembly process development to define and implement processes for active and passive optical alignment and related integration approaches on advanced optical assembly equipment.
  • Within Sanmina's Technology Development programs, define and establish next generation design and assembly capabilities to meet customers' future requirements.
  • Support prototype builds and engineering product verification through hands on engagement with the process engineering team to ensure compliance to requirements.
  • Support product transition into manufacturing and provide support needed to members of the production team.
  • Generate product documentation including design specifications, custom part drawings/requirements, etc.
  • Support new business development by interfacing with new customers to understand their requirements and generate appropriate proposals and associated quotations.
  • Some travel may be required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate engineering or science degree in a related discipline required with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise in design and development of optical products, from concept through to volume manufacturing.
  • Experience in a broad range of optical and microelectronic technologies, materials, components, assembly and test processes.
  • Experience with latest optical design and modeling tools and techniques.
  • Strong multidisciplinary background covering, microelectronics, packaging and assembly, process development, electrical design and simulation, mechanical and thermal design and simulation etc would be an asset.
  • Experience in end-to-end product development, with product manufacturing implementation also considered an asset.
  • Able to work well within a multidisciplinary product development team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
