Job overview:

The EMC and Safety Specialist supports the evaluation of product designs and conducts laboratory testing to ensure compliance with electrical safety, mechanical safety, and EMC standards under the guidance of senior team members. Responsibilities include assisting with design reviews, assessing insulation, flammability, PCB layout, and radiated emissions, coordinating with certification bodies and internal teams to facilitate product certification. The role involves performing internal evaluations such as radiated emissions, ESD, Hi-Pot, and Ground Bond testing in preparation for certification submissions. The specialist maintains accurate documentation, stays current with evolving regulatory standards, contributes to process improvements, supports factory audits, and adheres to company policies.

What the job is all about:

  • Assist in evaluating product designs and conducting testing to support compliance with applicable electrical safety, mechanical safety, and EMC standards, under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Assist with product safety design reviews and compliance testing under supervision. Support senior team members in conducting assessments and preparing documentation as it relates to creepage and clearance distances, insulation materials, flammability and related criteria.
  • Support EMC design reviews, following established guidelines for PCB layout and mechanical design to enable compliance with electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Support internal evaluations focused on radiated and conducted emissions, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and related criteria prior to submission to external test agencies for certification, seeking guidance from senior specialists when needed
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and certification bodies such as CSA, TUV, and NEMKO throughout the certification process.
  • Collaborate with Product Design, Order Management, Sales, and other cross-functional teams to support product certification and regulatory compliance, under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Assist with internal EMC evaluations (e.g., radiated emissions, ESD) and safety assessments (e.g., Hi-Pot, Ground Bond, motor overload) in preparation for NRTL submission.
  • Stay current with evolving international compliance and regulatory standards, including updates and new requirements.
  • Maintain accurate compliance documentation, declarations, and detailed schedules of certification activities.
  • Support factory audits conducted by NRTLs.
  • Participate in team discussions about process improvements and implement changes under the guidance of senior specialists.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Who you are:

  • Degree in Engineering or Technologist Diploma.
  • Solid understanding of electrical safety, mechanical safety, and EMC directives.
  • Familiarity with standards such as UL/CSA/IEC/EN 62368-1 and IEC/EN 60825-1.
  • Knowledge of EMC standards (e.g., EN55032, EN55035, CISPR 35) and environmental regulations (e.g., RoHS, WEEE, REACH) is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in using laboratory test equipment including Hi-Pot testers, spectrum analyzers, ESD guns, and antennas.
  • Strong interpersonal and observational skills.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision, referring to supervisor/manager for unusual problems or atypical tasks
  • Effective team player with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Quick learner with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 2+ years of experience with a Technologist Diploma.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for occasional travel to Iroquois and NRTL locations.
  • Primarily office based.
