Overall Requirements:
We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer with a strong background in cable and harness manufacturing, ideally in the military and aerospace sectors. The ideal incumbent will bring hands-on experience in evaluating technical data, developing accurate cost estimates, and optimizing manufacturing processes to support new product introductions. This role requires proficiency in BOM creation, labour costing, and a strong understanding of quality standards and compliance in a regulated environment. Strong analytical skills, proactive problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills are key attributes of a successful candidate for this role.
Responsibilities:
- New Product Evaluation & Costing:
- Review and analyze technical drawings and data packages for new custom cable and harness products
- Develop costing BOMs and collaborate with Procurement to source materials and tooling
- Estimate labor costs (engineering and production) based on cable build complexity, manufacturing capabilities, and tooling capacity
- Continuously refine labor costing models through time studies to improve accuracy in future bids
- Manufacturing Process Development & Optimization:
- Develop, evaluate, and improve cable assembly processes, considering product design, materials, tooling, and production equipment capabilities
- Define optimal assembly techniques and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce waste
- Estimate production times, staffing requirements, and costs to support management decision-making
- Ensure proper documentation of routing, production processes, and inspection checklists for operator reference
- New Product Introduction (NPI) & First Article Build Oversight:
- Oversee the first article build to verify that the product meets customer specifications and quality standards
- Develop and implement detailed work instructions, test plans (electrical, mechanical, environmental), and test reports
- Work closely with production teams to ensure a smooth transition from prototype to full-scale manufacturing
- BOM & MRP System Management:
- Review and finalize manufacturing BOMs upon receiving new purchase orders
- Upload BOMs into the MRP/ERP system for production planning and material procurement
- Monitor material availability and coordinate with procurement and production teams to ensure timely kitting and assembly
- Identify and recommend alternative materials or components that meet customer requirements to mitigate long lead times and ensure timely production
- Quality & Compliance Support:
- Assist the Quality Control (QC) team with documentation and troubleshooting during final inspections
- Ensure all manufacturing documentation complies with military and industry standards
- Apply statistical methods to estimate and analyze future manufacturing requirements and potential improvements
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and/or
- 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in cable and harness assembly
Additional Qualifications:
- Experience with military or aerospace cable and harness manufacturing is an asset
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing operations, process optimization, and quality control
- Expertise in BOM creation, labor standards, and cost estimation
- Familiarity with project management principles and cross-functional collaboration
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with the flexibility to adapt strategies as needed
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work independently and within a team
- Adept at learning new systems
- Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
- Knowledge of Advance Pro or other ERP systems and statistical analysis tools considered an asset
