Associate Director, Digital AI Research Technology Team Lead
RBC Capital
Job Description
WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?
Join RBC Capital Markets as the inaugural Associate Director leading the Digital AI Research Technology (DART) team. This is a strategic leadership role overseeing the production support, operational management, and technical excellence of a diversified portfolio of research and digital applications and platforms. You will lead a support team focused on delivering best-in-class service and stability across critical research and digital technology systems serving Capital Markets. In this role, you'll ensure that research teams and business users have reliable, well-maintained platforms while driving operational efficiency and proactive risk mitigation.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
- Team Leadership & Development: Strengthen the DART support team by defining clear roles and responsibilities for application support analysts, platform engineers, and digital technologists. Establish mentorship programs and career development pathways to retain skilled professionals and support their growth. Foster a team culture that emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning while maintaining operational discipline.
- Production Stability & Monitoring: Establish and maintain comprehensive proactive monitoring across the DART platform to enable early detection and prevention of issues. Implement robust monitoring tooling to provide visibility into application health, performance, and availability. Drive adoption of ITIL Service Transition best practices and establish performance targets to ensure consistent service delivery.
- Incident & Problem Management: Ensure production outages are managed properly through appropriate escalation protocols, coordination with stakeholders, and timely communication. Lead post-incident reviews to identify root causes and implement corrective measures. Establish incident response procedures and disaster recovery capabilities to minimize business disruption.
- Production Readiness & Onboarding: Establish and enforce controlled standards for productionizing new research and digital applications. Work closely with development and research teams during the Service Transition phase to ensure applications are supportable, scalable, and compliant with security and operational requirements before full production release.
- Automation & Efficiency: Identify and drive opportunities to automate manual support processes, reduce operational overhead, and improve team velocity. Support continuous evolution of the platform through efficiency improvements and capacity management initiatives that enable the team to scale without proportional growth in headcount.
- Risk Identification & Compliance: Proactively identify operational risks and control deficiencies within the DART portfolio. Escalate critical risks to leadership and relevant control functions on a timely basis. Ensure compliance with financial regulatory requirements and support internal/external audit processes related to application governance and operations.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with CTB (Change The Bank), research teams, business users, I&TS, and other technology functions to understand requirements and maintain alignment. Maintain strong relationships with application owners and business partners to ensure consistent high-level service delivery. Communicate operational status, risks, and improvements to senior stakeholders.
- Documentation & Knowledge Management: Set high standards for the creation and maintenance of technical support documentation, operational runbooks, and procedural guides. Ensure that all team members contribute to comprehensive documentation in Confluence, JIRA, and related systems to support knowledge transfer and operational continuity. Create senior management-level content for reporting and stakeholder communication.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
Must have:
- 7-10 years of hands-on technical experience supporting a portfolio of applications in production environments and 3-5 years of proven experience managing a team of individual contributors within production services, operations, or application support functions.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated experience building proactive application monitoring capabilities using industry monitoring tools and platforms.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, and operate effectively in high-pressure situations
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex technical and operational concepts to business stakeholders and senior management.
Nice-to-have:
- ITIL certification (Foundation or higher).
- Proficiency with DevOps practices and CI/CD technology stacks (Jenkins, Git/GitHub, Ansible).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) or containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Track record scaling technical teams in regulated financial services environments.
