What is the opportunity?
RBC is growing in Australia and is looking for a candidate to add to the Australian Equity Research team based in Sydney or Melbourne. We are looking for a suitably qualified candidate with an avid interest in financial markets. Candidates will be responsible for fundamental analysis of Australian companies operating across the Global Industrials sectors.
RBC provides investment research to institutional fund managers in Australia and offshore. Companies covered vary from established large cap businesses to emerging small cap companies. Associate roles primarily provide research support to Lead Analysts. As you develop, your career pathway includes assuming lead coverage of some companies in your own right depending on your experience and track record of performance in the role.
What will you do?
- Understand what companies under coverage do, how they do it, and the market environment in which they operate.
- To understand and be able to build and update company financial models in Microsoft Excel.
- Understand how the company’s profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow statements interrelate and be able to build and link the core items of these financial statements in Microsoft Excel.
- Be able to update historical company financials from available public data sources.
- Understand the key drivers of a company’s earnings profile and be able to forecast future earnings estimates.
- Understand how to value a company using different valuation methods e.g. DCF valuation methodology, comparable company and multiples analysis.
- Generate high quality research reports and presentations.
- Build and maintain databases of key industry data points.
- Support the Lead Analyst to promptly respond to institutional client queries.
- Identify key operational and earnings risks of companies under research coverage e.g. competitor, ESG, macro, commodity price, geopolitical etc.
- Establish key industry contacts to assist in forming a comprehensive view of the company and the operating environment.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Strong interest in equity markets and finance.
- Willingness to learn and analyse industry sectors and companies.
- Undergraduate degree with a focus on Business, Commerce, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or similar field.
- Minimum 2-3 years’ full-time work experience, preferably in an equity research role or corporate finance role at a bank, stockbroking firm, investment fund or accounting firm.
- Excellent writing and communications skills with the ability to interact with the CEO, CFO and IR personnel of the companies under coverage.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong skills across Microsoft Office applications – primarily Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to source data and concisely summarise information from multiple sources e.g. online databases, government statistics, journals, trade publications etc.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure in a high paced environment.
- Flexibility to travel when required.
Nice-to-have
- CFA qualification, or
- An accounting qualification, or
- Relevant post-grad qualification.
- Work experience in industrial companies and/or sectors.
- FactSet or Bloomberg experience.
