What is the opportunity?

As Senior Manager of the Wills and Trusts Resource Group (“WTRG”), the candidate will be a member of the principal resource facility providing technical and legal support for Canadian Wealth Management employees in fulfilling their fiduciary duties and responsibilities. The candidate will oversee a team of estate and trust specialists providing technical support to Canadian Wealth Management partners on estate, trust, PoA related issues and documentation.

What will you do?

Capability and Engagement

  • Lead and oversee the Wills and Trusts Resource Group, a team of estate and trust specialists responsible for the review of estate and trust account documentation and for providing technical assistance, analysis and recommendations on estate and trust account and disbursement issues to wealth management partner businesses
  • Research, analyze and oversee complex estate, trust and incapacity issues escalated by WTRG staff utilizing knowledge of relevant jurisdictional laws and principles
  • Support Canadian Wealth Management partners in review and development of proposed policies/guidelines related to estate, trust and incapacity account administration issues to manage risk and to promote consistency in business practices across all lines of businesses
  • Accountable to remain current in the area of estates and trusts law (common law)

Managerial Excellence:

  • Manage, coach and develop the WTRG staff and foster an environment of continuous learning and improvement with regular meetings and feedback on work product
  • Ensure that employees understand RBC vision, as well as support and reinforce targeted behaviours that contribute to RBC goals, and managing performance that does not align to goals and values
  • Provide focus and clarity in establishing individual goals and performance targets, driving performance management, supporting career development and rewarding strong performance.

  • Accept and successfully execute change while supporting employees through the process, and keeping them focused on business priorities

Client Experience

  • Research, analyze and oversee complex incapacity, estate and trust issues escalated by WTRG staff utilizing knowledge of relevant jurisdictional laws and principles
  • Ensure PoA issues and estate and trust account issues are prioritized by staff based on urgency of issue, in order to provide timely recommendations and ensure agreed upon SLAs are met
  • Play active role in developing relationship with business partners and providing a positive client experience.

Operational, Risk and Business Management

  • Oversee waiver of probate and business exception escalation process to ensure that recommendations provided to the business balance risk and business interest
  • Make reasoned and informed recommendations to the WM business relating to the support of incapacity, estate and trust issues including but not limited to proper disbursements, succession of trustees, issues related to registered plans, disputes and complaints regarding a specific account and all related issues surrounding trust and estate accounts
  • Identify business risks, legal risks on any account escalated to WTRG and escalate issue to the appropriate resource function (i.e. Law Group, TAG, Compliance)
  • Identify trends in PoA issues, estate and trust related account issues and to assist the business in developing policies and procedures to address recurring issues

What do you need to succeed?

Must have’s

  • Common Law degree
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian estates and trusts law (common law) gained through 6+ years private practice or within the estates and trusts industry
  • Exhibits strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and client service skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Willingness to participate in continued learning

Nice to have’s

  • Trust designation preferred (TEP)
  • 2+ years People Management experience
