What is the opportunity?
In this role you will support the Managing Counsel, Banking in the Caribbean Banking Law Group in providing legal services to RBC Financial (Caribbean) Limited and its subsidiaries/affiliates to achieve its business/strategic priorities and to fulfil the performance goals of the Caribbean Banking Law Group. You will also provide legal services to RBC Caribbean Banking on a broad range of enterprise-related matters or specialized areas of law, with an emphasis on transactional and non-transactional legal support and advice; focusing on Capital Markets, Commercial Banking (including Investment Banking, Corporate Banking, Corporate Finance and Advisory services), Personal Banking and Brokerage services.
What will you do?
- Provide legal counsel and guidance to Caribbean Banking on core areas of operations and responsibilities including Capital Markets, Commercial Banking (including Investment Banking, Corporate Banking, Corporate Finance and Advisory services) Brokerage services (West Indies Stockbrokers Limited) and Personal Banking
- Deliver sound, innovative, solution-oriented and cost-effective legal advice demonstrating expert knowledge of areas of legal specialization and acts as the subject matter legal expert on complex transactions and securities law
- Primarily responsible for the drafting, reviewing and negotiating of legal, security and ancillary documentation for transactions and works alongside key stakeholders to close transactions within the given timeframe
- Partner with Caribbean Banking business partners on allocated projects or other initiatives of critical importance to Caribbean Banking
- Participate in a variety of business, law and risk management activities having corporate wide impact and assist in instituting preventative and recommended law processes
- Together with other members of the Law Group, develop self-service tools and disseminate training to business partners
- Collaborate to monitor/manage legal and regulatory changes and advancements in the multiple jurisdictions in which Caribbean Banking operates
- Provide any additional assistance or advice to Caribbean Banking, Law Group and Royal Bank of Canada as required
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) or equivalent law degree from recognized law school
- Legal Education Certificate (L.E.C.)
- Admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago
- Minimum 10 years progressive experience in capital markets, corporate banking and finance, investment banking and commercial law
- Preferred Knowledge of Law – Demonstrates a high level of proficiency in specialised and complex areas of law, particularly in laws applicable to securities, corporate banking, trusts, investment products and general banking
- Sound risk assessment skills and business judgment
- Good communication skills – written and oral
- Able to handle large volumes and work with a high degree of autonomy
Nice to Have
- Master of Laws (L.L.M.) or Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) is an asset
- Membership in multiple member jurisdictions of the Council of Legal Education is an asset
