What is the role?

The Senior Director Operational Risk Management, Personal & Commercial Operations directs the identification and measurement of organizational, physical and financial risks; implements programs and business processes to minimize risk. This position leads a team of Directors, Sr Managers and Managers by providing people and financial and resource guidance.

What will you do?

  • This role has first line of defense responsibility for operational risk. Responsible to support Personal & Commercial Banking Segments in identifying and mitigating operational risk. In pursuing this mandate the incumbent provides challenge and oversight activities over the Business Unit who has primary accountability for operational risk.
  • Maintain effective relationships and routines with first, second and third line of defense risk, governance and control teams, and review, understand and action in a timely manner issues and trends highlighted in risk, governance and control reporting.
  • Provide operational risk management leadership within Personal & Commercial Banking (PB/CB), which includes provision of expertise, advice and counsel to executives and senior management, enhancing their ability to anticipate and manage operational risks effectively.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the RBC Enterprise Operational Risk Framework within PB/CB, ensuring compliance with all Enterprise policies with ORM responsibilities.
  • Ensures alignment with the PB/CB Risk Appetite managed by Regulatory Strategy & Delivery
  • Ensure the effective implementation and execution of Operational Risk programs including Internal operational risk events, external event analysis, issue management, scenario analysis, and risk and control identification and assessment
  • Proactively identify, measure, and analyze operational risks providing mitigation strategies where appropriate including controls
  • Provide leadership on operational risk reviews and feedback on the operational risk impact of major change initiatives, process improvements and transformational projects.
  • Provide leadership on audit and SOX issues that impact PB & CB
  • Investigate large loss events to assess for potential systemic weaknesses, if similar issues can arise in other parts of RBC, and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
  • Align operational risk activities with other assessment activities to ensure Canadian Banking PB/CB units receive a fully coordinated assessment of operational risks.
  • Partner with the Senior Director, Operational Risk COE on a combined operating model which ensures proactive risk identification, assessment and mitigation.

What Do You Need

Must Have Skills

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in Operational Risk Managment
  • Solid understanding of risk management
  • Proven leadership within the business or function
  • Strategic mindset, with excellent knowledge and understanding of RBC businesses and organization
  • Highly developed ability for conceptual thinking
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Proven track record of building strong relationships across business functions
