Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The RBC Law Group, Canadian Retail & Commercial Lending, Private Banking Team is looking for a dynamic Law Clerk in its team to:

  • assist in the review of questions pertaining to loan and secured lending matters already subject to a standardized process (including priority agreements with other creditors, and payout letters);
  • proactively refer business partners consulting Law Branch Escalations (“LBE”) to pre-existing tools and templates, where same already respond to the issues presented;
  • collect missing factual information and documents necessary to assess a loan or secured lending related inquiry presented to LBE and then allocate the matter to responsible lawyer in efficient manner;
  • help identify recurring trends and matters presented to LBE from a lending perspective and assist the Team with the development of further self-help tools and templates so that business partners can autonomously resolve some more commoditized legal matters; and
  • participate in weekly team meetings to discuss matters sent into LBE which are for the Canadian Retail & Commercial Lending, Private Banking Team, and help identify opportunities to streamline legal advice.

In addition to the foregoing, the person in this role will also:

  • act as a law branch escalations coordinator with a lead role in the initial review and evaluation of incoming inquiries from various business partners across the Bank, to allocate same to the appropriate Law Group Team members (including to members of the Powers of Attorney and Estates Team and the Litigation Team);
  • assist in streamlining the flow of legal work within Law Group and focus on operational effectiveness, innovation and professionalism; and
  • ensure that all legal matters are identified early, classified accurately and assigned to the appropriate legal team members for action efficiently.

This is an opportunity to form part of dynamic team within RBC Law Group known for thinking out of the box and proactively solving legal issues.

What will you do?

  • Assist the Canadian Retail & Commercial Lending, Private Banking Team with:
    • responding to simpler legal lending related matters escalated to LBE (namely by redirecting business partners to existing resources) so that more commoditized recurring matters can be resolved without the intervention of a lawyer,
    • gathering missing documents and information to improve efficiency of responses,
    • developping further self-help tools and templates to solve for recurring issues;
  • Assess the highly time-sensitive nature and urgency of each matter or request and prioritize matters based on urgency, risk and impact to the Bank;
  • Be accountable for the day-to-day operations of LBE and proactively act as the first point of contact and key liaison in directing each issue to the appropriate legal team;
  • Anticipate issues and initiate appropriate actions to ensure the delivery of superior support by LBE;
  • Participate in Team meetings of the Canadian Retail & Commercial Lending, Private Banking Team;
  • Manage a full range of administrative processes including the tracking of all inquiries and preparing monthly reports to senior management;
  • Accept service of process in connection with litigation matters;
  • Responsible for other general Administration support requirements for the team
