Please note: This posting is for a 4-month Winter 2025 STUDENT placement with a start date of January 2025 and end-date of April 2025. In order to be eligible for this 4-month Student position, you must either:

  • Be returning back to school after the work term end-date of April 2025; or
  • If you are not returning back to school (i.e. are graduating in December 2024/April 2025), but you require the work term as a mandatory component to in order to graduate successfully.

What is the opportunity?

In this role, you will be part of the RBC Commercial Banking Sustainable Finance (“SF”) Group, which is responsible for the execution of the mid-market ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategy as it relates to client engagement, advisory and structuring across RBC’s Commercial Banking client base.

The SF Group develops financing and transaction advisory solutions (i.e. M&A) that support the requirements of Commercial Banking clients integrating a range of ESG initiatives, as well as structuring advice relating to Sustainable Finance loan products, including Green Loans (GL) and Sustainability Linked Loans (SLL).

The SF Group also works closely with various partners across the enterprise, including Capital Markets Sustainable Finance Group, BFS Strategy, Enterprise Strategy & Transformation, Corporate Citizenship and Group Risk Management to position RBC as a market leader in sustainable (green, social, decarbonization) finance.

What will you do?

  • Develop pitch books and client-related materials related to sustainable finance (e.g. green/social/sustainability and sustainability-linked financial products)

  • Assist in deal execution and coordinate with Relationship Managers, Finance, ABL, M&A, MMLIF and other groups to support clients' needs
  • Support Finance team’s credit submissions, including research and due diligence as part of transaction processes
  • Monitor global sustainability and ESG trends, themes, and topics
  • Analyze quantitative data related to sustainable finance
  • Review research and reports to distill insights to support client-facing thought-leadership
  • Support development of internal strategy for Enterprise-level climate initiatives

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Working towards an Undergraduate degree with a focus in business, economics, accounting, or finance
  • Strong computer literacy with emphasis on PowerPoint and Excel presentation skills
  • Knowledge of key trends, themes and issues related to ESG, sustainable finance and sustainability
  • Ability to use research tools to extract relevant background material for business development and transaction support
  • Ability to take initiative and function independently, balanced with strong teamwork and collaboration skills under time constraints
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Attention to detail

Nice-to-have

  • Prior experience in financial services and ability to manage complex concepts
  • Knowledge of sustainability standards and frameworks, including SASB and ISSB
