Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The Manager, Accounting Policy and External Reporting assists stakeholders with understanding and applying IFRS, and helps tell the story of RBC’s financial results to the public by collaborating with key contributors from across the organization to create effective and consistent external reporting. This is an ideal position from which to develop an understanding of RBC’s businesses, grow your technical and leadership skills and build strong relationships across the Bank.

As part of the Chief Accountant’s Group in our Toronto head office, you will be part of a collaborative team culture that strives to challenge ourselves to be our best, think progressively to keep growing, and work together to deliver collective results.

The Accounting Policy function serves a critical role by providing advice on complex accounting issues through a strategic lens. We are trusted business advisors who evaluate and advise on accounting impacts to RBC’s businesses, drive change to operationalize accounting policies, structure transactions to optimize results and actively participate in industry advocacy on significant issues. The External Reporting function is responsible for ensuring that financial results are effectively and consistently communicated to the general public and investment community, and that external disclosures comply with key stakeholder requirements.

What will you do?

  • Develop strong business partner relationships to foster greater understanding of key drivers and metrics to ensure disclosures effectively communicate our results.
  • Review and monitor new business proposals, ensuring that any accounting issues are appropriately addressed, including coordinating with key stakeholders to track and drive issues to conclusion.
  • Provide accounting advisory advice on business unit transactions and support implementation of new and amended accounting standards.
  • Provide support to develop and maintain RBC’s corporate accounting policies in accordance with IFRS and U.S. GAAP, including briefing stakeholders on new developments.
  • Assist in preparation of financial statements, including reviews of quarterly reporting and drafting of notes.
  • Assist in the preparation of external reporting materials, mainly the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) while ensuring effective governance and challenge is incorporated into the end-to-end report and underlying processes.
  • Support the organization in assessing, evaluating and responding to new disclosure and regulatory requirements impacting RBC’s external disclosures.
  • Work with our Investor Relations team and other key stakeholders to assist in the preparation and review of quarterly Earnings Release, analyst slides and investor call speeches.
  • Liaise with the external and internal auditors on financial accounting and reporting policy issues, as needed.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, team-first environment and bring your unique perspective and curiosity to set ambitious goals and drive process improvement initiatives to challenge the status quo.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in an accounting or policy related position.
  • Strong technical background in IFRS; experience with U.S. GAAP is desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to executives.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and lead independently, while knowing when to escalate and ask for support.
  • Curiosity and drive to learn about accounting requirements, banking products and RBC’s business model and develop analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; specifically, able to act as change agent, facilitator and collaborator.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Nice-to-have

  • Previous banking experience is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of current U.S. GAAP is desirable.

What’s in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • Opportunity to do varied and intellectually challenging work and gain exposure to a wide range of stakeholders across the enterprise.
  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, flexible benefits and competitive compensation.
  • Leaders and mentors who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities.
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive and high performing team.
  • Learning opportunities to help you sharpen your leadership skills in addition to hands-on experience in the global, fast-changing business world.
