The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead unit-level, board-level and third-party hardware evaluation for the Space and Defense hardware team. The role will require close collaboration with other hardware engineering disciplines including electrical design, test, and PCB layout. A diverse skill set is required which includes experience in mechanical design, thermal modeling, design for environment, as well as aspects of safety and regulatory testing.

The Space and Defense Team looks for and helps develop new vertical markets leveraging Nokia products and IPR. As a Senior Mechanical engineer on the team, you will contribute to the development of products which address the needs of customers in the Defense, Public Safety, Private Network, and Space markets.
You have:
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident is required
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering. Master's degree preferred.
- At least 3 years' experience in hardware mechanical design taking products to production.
- Ability to use a wide variety of mechanical design tools to facilitate physical design, thermal performance, environmental testing in conformance with specifications.
- Customer and partner/vendor relationship management experience.
- Proficient communication (verbal, written) skills
You have:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
• Approximate 3-10 years of experience in hardware mechanical design, driving products to production
• Experience with designing die casting, plastic injection molding, and sheetmetal parts Familiarity with PCB layout processes and interconnect system selection
• Good understanding of mechanical tolerance analysis and designing considering this
• Design experience with thermal performance as an essential design attribute
• Working knowledge of designing with EMI considerations
• FEA (Finite Element Analysis) experience with ANSYS or other tool
• Proficiency in mechanical design tools for thermal performance and environmental testing compliance
• Experience with hands on assembly of prototype units
It would be nice if you also had:

• Knowledge of safety and regulatory testing standards
- Lead mechanical design for Space and Defense hardware projects, from concept through to production.
- Collaborate closely with electrical designers and software engineers to create integrated, holistic designs.
- Work with PCB layout experts to optimize board-level designs and ensure effective connector/interconnect system choices.
- Report on program status weekly to management and during release manager meetings, ensuring transparency and alignment.
- Interface with supply chain representatives to coordinate material sourcing, assembly, and testing for prototypes.
- Compile evidence of hardware design maturity for key project milestones (P7 and P8), ensuring quality standards are met.
- Champion the transition of designs from prototype to production, ensuring all necessary documentation and compliance are in place.
- Mentor junior mechanical engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team.

- Have direct responsibility for mechanical designs from block diagram level down to schematic-level circuitry.
- Cooperate with electrical designers and software team engineers to develop a well-considered holistic design.
- Interact closely with PCB layout experts to realize the board-level design, emphasizing proper selection of connector/interconnect systems.
- Provide weekly reporting of program status within release manager meetings and to management as required.
- Interface with Nokia Supply Chain representatives at a detailed level to plan material acquisition, prototype factory assembly, and factory test to deliver per the prototype plan.
- Compile all necessary evidence at P7 and P8 milestones to demonstrate HW design maturity and quality.
- Champion the design work needed to effort to successfully launch the product into production.
