This Nokia Bell Labs internship seeks a highly motivated student to investigate sensing in next-generation Passive Optical Network and Fiber-To-The-Home technologies based on an in-house developed polarization-sensing platform. The internship includes exploring artificial intelligence techniques to analyze and classify obtained measurement to be able to detect and identify useful events on the fiber network from the background noise.

This is an internship on AI-based environmental sensing in passive optical networks, waiting for your application!
Must-Have:
- Be enrolled in a Master's or PhD in Electrical/Software/AI Engineering or related area.
- Knowledge on machine learning
- Hands-on experience with simulation tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch).
- Available for a duration of at least 6 weeks and up to 6 months.
- Fluent in English.
- A positive and open mindset and strong drive to succeed.
Nice-to-Have:
- An affinity for or experience with optical telecommunication technologies.
- An affinity for or experience with different machine learning techniques (neural networks, decision trees, …).
- Experience in working with experimental lab setups & high-end test equipment.
- Demonstrated early research results through journal papers or industry recognition.
- Acquire knowledge on passive optical networks and PON sensing technologies through an initial literature study.
- Explore different use-cases of polarization sensing, develop suitable measurement scenarios
- Analyze the measurements with state-of-the-art AI techniques that can be translated to useful software for real-world PON networks
- Propose out-of-the-box solutions which have a high-performance impact.
- Document and present the developed system and results to a wider Bell Labs audience
