Senior Data Science and Machine Learning Engineer

Finland

In this role, you will leverage advanced data science and machine learning methods to extract insights from large, heterogeneous corpora of patents, technical standards, academic articles, and related IPR datasets. You will build tools and models for semantic search, classification, entity extraction, and similarity analysis to support R&D, legal, and business teams in identifying relevant prior art, monitoring technology trends, and assessing competitive landscapes.

This position sits at the intersection of AI, information retrieval, and intellectual property analytics, requiring both strong technical skills and a deep appreciation for the nuances of patent and standards data. You will collaborate closely with patent attorneys, IP analysts, and technical experts to translate complex information needs into robust, scalable data solutions.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AND WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Design and implement information retrieval systems for patents, standards, and literature using NLP and semantic search.
  • Develop and maintain pipelines for ingestion, preprocessing, and enrichment of structured and unstructured IPR data.
  • Build ML models for patent classification, keyword extraction, document clustering, and similarity detection.
  • Enhance prior art search processes with advanced text mining, graph analysis, and knowledge representation techniques.
  • Leverage graph analytics and knowledge representation to enhance document search and technology mapping.
  • Establish frameworks for model performance monitoring, drift detection, and automated retraining.
  • Research and implement new ML techniques to improve existing systems and solve novel problems.
  • Integrate public and commercial patent databases with internal systems to create unified search and analytics capabilities.
  • Work with IP and R&D stakeholders to shape the technical roadmap for IP analytics tools.
  • Learn the intricacies of global patent classification systems, standards organizations, and technology domain taxonomies.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • M.Sc. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data science, NLP, or information retrieval, preferably with IPR or scientific literature.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with ML/NLP frameworks (e.g., spaCy, Hugging Face Transformers, PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Experience with search technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch, Solr) and semantic search methods.
  • Experience with vector databases.
  • Knowledge of text processing, entity recognition, and similarity measures for large corpora.
  • Understanding of statistical modeling, ML validation methods, and experimental design.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure) and MLOps practices.
  • MLOps practices: CI/CD, Docker/Kubernetes, model versioning.
  • Ability to collaborate across legal, technical, and business functions.

It would be nice if you also had:

  • Experience in graph databases (Neo4j, RDF triplestores) for representing technology relationships.
  • Background in legal tech, IP analytics platforms, or standards organizations.
  • Familiarity with patent data formats (e.g., XML, WIPO ST.36/ST.96), patent classification schemes (CPC, IPC), and citation networks.
  • Contributions to open-source NLP or IR projects.
  • Understanding of knowledge graphs and ontologies in technology domains.
  • Familiarity with multilingual and multimodal patent and standards data processing.
