The Role
We are looking for a Technical Officer, Welder/Fabricator to support our Design and Fabrication Services Branch. The Technical Officer, Welder/Fabricator to would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
Design and Fabrication Services (DFS) is the National Research Council's (NRC) principal design and fabrication organization supporting research and innovation by enabling the NRC research and engineering facilities through the timely delivery of precision mechanical prototype equipment and apparatus in line with the overall strategic direction of NRC.
The Technical Officer, Welder/Fabricator's role is to create precision mechanical prototypes and welded assemblies for DFS using welding as a core skill as well as various other fabrication techniques.
Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Successful completion of secondary school according to provincial standards.
720 hours from an accredited post-secondary institution in a Welding and Fabrication Techniques program or equivalent.

Experience
-
- Significant* experience utilizing a range of welding techniques in the fabrication of high-quality prototypes, and designing and fabricating fixtures for welding.
- Experience with CAD, interpreting engineering drawings, sketches and instructions to determine scope of assignment.
- Experience utilizing a wide range of hand tools and welding equipment.
- Experience interacting with clients, client teams, fabrication and design staff on elements of projects such as: progress update; planning work; estimating task durations; discussing risks with team members; presenting options and reporting progress.

Condition of Employment
Secret (II)
A thorough security clearance process will be applied.
For a Secret Clearance, verification of background information over a period of 10 years is required. Individuals must have lived in Canada for a sufficient period of time to enable the security screening process.
Candidates will be expected to maintain qualification with the Canadian Welding Bureau for standards.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical Competencies
- Knowledge of theory, application, procedures, and standards of different welding techniques (GMAW,GTAW,SMAW, materials such as steel, stainless steel aluminum alloy).
- Ability to discuss with engineers, researchers, designers, supervisors and team members the requirements and provide general advice regarding potential problem areas, propose enhancements, alterations and potential welding solutions.
- Ability to plan the welding component of the project (work, job).
- Ability to work from CAD files, blueprints and understanding engineering welding symbols and sketches.
- Ability to fabricate using various types of manual machine tools (i.e.; shears, brake press, iron worker, etc.)
- Knowledge of conventions for tolerances and fits, and related engineering drawing notation practices to be able to assemble, inspect and test components as required to ensure proper fit and function.

Compensation
From $66,126 to $91,012 per annum.
