Job Description:

We are seeking a proactive and detail‑oriented VAT Accountant / Senior VAT Accountant to support European shipping activities and ensure VAT compliance across multiple jurisdictions. This role is heavily focused on operational VAT, working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve VAT issues, improve billing accuracy, and ensure compliance with evolving VAT and customs requirements.

The position offers the opportunity to act as a key VAT point of contact for the business, contributing to process improvements, system enhancements, and interactions with tax and customs authorities.

Main Responsibilities

VAT Compliance & Reporting
• Prepare, review, and file UK (two registrations), Ireland, and OSS VAT returns, ensuring timely and accurate submissions
• Coordinate with external professional service providers to support the preparation and filing of Germany (two registrations) and France (three registrations) VAT returns, including Intrastat filings and EC Sales Lists
• Monitor VAT legislative changes and assess impacts on the company’s European operations
Business Partnering & Issue Resolution
• Proactively liaise with Accounts Receivable and Sales teams to resolve VAT related queries, including correcting billings, addressing customer disputes, and implementing preventative solutions
• Act as a key VAT contact for customer facing teams, providing practical guidance on VAT treatments for cross border transactions
• Support timely resolution of VAT errors through corrective actions such as credit notes, re invoicing, and disclosures where required
Systems, Processes & Controls
• Work closely with the Information Systems team on VAT related projects to improve VAT determination, billing accuracy, reporting quality, and automation
• Develop, document, and maintain VAT processes and procedures, ensuring consistency, knowledge sharing, and audit readiness
• Identify control gaps and recommend enhancements to strengthen VAT governance
Customs, Audits & External Liaison
• Liaise with Customs authorities and external advisors in relation to VAT and customs disclosures, audits, and inquiries
• Support preparation of documentation and responses for VAT and customs audits across multiple jurisdictions
• Maintain constructive working relationships with tax advisors and authorities to ensure issues are resolved efficiently
Senior Level Responsibilities (where applicable)
• Lead or contribute to complex VAT projects and cross functional initiatives
• Provide VAT technical input into new business models, routes to market, or system changes
• Coach and provide informal guidance to junior finance or operational team members

Requirements/Qualifications:

Required:
• Solid experience in European VAT compliance, ideally in an operational or transaction driven environment
• Strong working knowledge of UK and EU VAT, including cross border trade and OSS
• Demonstrated ability to work proactively with Accounts Receivable, Sales, Systems, and external service providers
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a problem solving mindset
• Effective communication skills with the confidence to challenge, influence, and advise stakeholders
• Studying towards or qualified in ACCA, CIMA, or CTA, or an equivalent professional qualification
Preferred / Senior Level:
• Experience in a multinational or supply chain focused environment
• Exposure to VAT determination engines, ERP systems, or billing platforms
• Experience dealing with HMRC and other European tax or customs authorities, including audits or disclosures
• Ability to lead or take ownership of complex VAT projects and cross functional initiatives
Foreign language skills would be advantageous.
