Job Description

The Opportunity
As a member of the McDonald’s UK & Ireland People Team, the Safeguarding Manager will lead on the design and delivery of a new, industry-leading safeguarding strategy that will help us achieve our ambitions of creating a best-in-class workplace culture, and being the best employer of young people.

The role will be responsible for defining what safeguarding means for the business, and working with internal and external experts to develop an approach and process that supports the 170,000 people who work across our 1500+ restaurants and various communities and contacts they serve in the UK & Ireland.

The chosen individual will be able to influence both within the marketplace and with Segment and Global People Leadership teams to develop a safeguarding strategy that is scalable, and that keeps both our people, our customers and our contexts at the heart of decision-making the heart of decision making.

The Safeguarding Manager will be expected to provide credible and inspirational leadership, coaching and strategic direction to the entire UK & Ireland People Team and Leadership Team, consistently demonstrating McDonald's values and leadership behaviours to build positive business relationships with key customers including Chief People Officer, Director of Culture, members of the Senior Leadership Team, Franchisees and restaurant teams.

What will my accountabilities be?
In addition to following McDonald’s policies and procedures, principal accountabilities will include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning

  • Design and implement a bold, coherent, progressive and industry-leading safeguarding strategy which contributes to the broader People strategy in the UK & Ireland
  • Develop our safeguarding policies and procedures, embedding them throughout the business
  • Define, design and develop a safeguarding training strategy for all internal audiences, that helps support our people to develop their confidence, skills and knowledge in this area
  • Develop appropriate enhancements to current systems to support younger workers
  • Develop our recording systems in relation to individual and contextual safeguarding matters
  • Ensures that the voice of our restaurant teams is prominent in all the relevant forums to ensure the business puts people at the centre of strategic planning
  • Ensure our safeguarding strategy, plans and policies protect our brand and our people
  • Provide end-to-end initiative leadership, with ongoing evaluation of solutions, project planning, solution implementation, and value capture.
  • Support the development and implementation of Workplace Culture Action Plan
  • Take a leadership position across the wider business to influence strategy
  • Be an active member of the People Leadership Team
  • Representing McDonalds in key national safeguarding partnerships that facilitate ongoing implementation across the business

People

  • Champion inclusive leadership and continually drive an inclusive and supportive culture.
  • Responsible for the leadership and further establishment of the Workplace Culture function for the business
  • Support and educate the business on safeguarding, including Executive members, to foster and evolve a ‘best in class’ culture.
  • Set and communicate goals, monitoring progress to ensure all aspects of work are effectively managed; handling workload peaks and conflicts.
  • Identify means to create more simplified ways of working for the team through clear prioritisation and improving processes and systems through which the team work.
  • Work with the Speak Up Network to get the restaurant voice built into the strategy

Functional Requirements

  • Work with key third party experts and stakeholders to ensure best-in-class approach and deployment
  • Help to embed safeguarding processes in all areas of the organisation.
  • Work in partnership with Franchisees and restaurant teams to create a consistent safeguarding approach across the whole organisation.
  • Design and lead the delivery of solutions for safeguarding training across the organisation, including for the office and restaurant teams
  • Be the initial point of contact for safeguarding concerns and referring to local authorities and wider safeguarding bodies s necessary.
  • Provide advice on specific projects by acting as safeguarding lead, sharing guidance, developing frameworks, tools, and training.
  • Advise and support senior management and make recommendations on how we continuously improve.
  • Aligning to one McDonald’s way to strengthen consistent brand protection, build trust, drive business results, and improve our customer and people’s experiences.

Qualifications

What background do I need to have?

  • Previous experience of working in a strategic safeguarding role
  • Previous experience, or knowledge of, safeguarding practices either in social work or youth work related roles
  • Knowledge of Contextual Safeguarding
  • Experience of safeguarding policy development and implementation
  • Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and best practice in the UK
  • Desirable but not required might be:
  • Social work registration/qualification or youth work qualification
  • Knowledge of adolescent development or working with young people
  • Development of safeguarding functions in large-scale or non-specialist organisations
