Job Overview
This role serves as a trusted legal advisor and strategic partner to designated Research & Development Services (R&DS) business leaders. The role is designed to align legal advice with business objectives, enabling growth while identifying, mitigating, and managing legal and regulatory risk. The Legal Business Partner operates close to the business, with day-to-day responsibility for legal counseling, contract support, and issue-spotting, while coordinating effectively with specialist Global Legal functions.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Business Partnering
Develop a strong understanding of assigned R&DS business units and provide practical, business-oriented legal advice that supports achievement of business goals.
Proactively identify legal and regulatory risks and recommend solutions that are pragmatic, scalable, and aligned with business realities.
Legal Counseling & Issue Management
Serve as first-line legal counsel for R&DS matters within scope, including issue-spotting, analysis, and resolution.
Translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
Contracting & Commercial Support
Support R&DS customer and vendor contracting activities, including review, negotiation, and guidance on standard and non-standard agreements.
Partner closely with Lead Contract Negotiators (LCN) and other contracting resources, consistent with the R&DS contracting model.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Coordinate with Global Legal specialist teams (Privacy, Compliance, Regulatory, IP, Regional Legal) to ensure matters are owned by the appropriate subject-matter experts while maintaining overall continuity for the business.
Foster strong working relationships with finance, operations, quality, and other enabling functions.
Risk Management & Compliance
Support the business in understanding and complying with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies affecting R&DS activities.
Contribute to the development and consistent application of legal guidance, templates, and playbooks relevant to R&DS.
Assist with audits, inspections, and internal reviews as needed, in coordination with relevant Legal and Compliance teams.
Outside Counsel Management
Engage and manage outside counsel when appropriate, consistent with internal guidelines.
Oversee scope, cost, and quality of outside counsel support and ensure alignment with business objectives.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (or equivalent) and an active license to practice law in applicable jurisdiction.
Fluent English
Minimum of eight (8) years in-house legal department, law firm and/or other relevant legal experience.
Effective organizational, planning, project management, communication, presentation, interpersonal, pragmatic problem-solving and influence skills.
Strong business acumen and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and/or drug development process preferred.
Working knowledge of data protection, privacy, and related laws and regulations preferred.
Ability to engage in complex problem solving, hard-working and results-orientated
Demonstrated ability to work creatively in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated sound judgment/decision-making skills.
Skilled in using MS Office Suite: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
