Are you an experienced Senior Mining Engineer looking to progress your career? We're looking for a Senior Mining Engineer to join our growing team. Our preference is to have this position based in our St. John’s, NL office. We are also open to having the role based in any of our other Atlantic Canada offices (such as Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, Saint John, NB, or Fredericton, NB).

At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We’re an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We’re large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team. Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

You’re an ideal candidate if you have:

  • Bachelor or Masters Degree in Mining and/or Mine Engineering. We may also consider candidates with a combination of related education, such as a related Civil Engineering degree and an additional Certificate in Mine Engineering.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in Consulting on mining related projects.
  • Currently licensed in a Canadian province, or eligible for registration as a P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for work related travel.

A typical day on the job might look like:

  • Leading and managing mining studies and projects from start to completion, at all stages of the mine life cycle.
  • Developing and implementing mine plans that optimize resource extraction.
  • Conducting prefeasibility, feasibility and detailed design level studies and risk assessments to inform project direction.
  • Advise, liaise with and lead project teams and coordinating with geologists, environmental scientists, and other stakeholders on mining projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and safety protocols.
  • Providing technical support and guidance to intermediate and junior engineers, structural geologists, geoscientists and technical staff.
  • Monitoring project progress and preparing detailed reports for senior management.
  • Performing technical mining engineering tasks and outputs on a senior level.
  • Periodic travel to client sites to perform project work.
  • Sourcing geological information and converting it into mining models.
  • Providing strategic mine design recommendations, scheduling, and reporting in various project phases.
  • Mining-related inputs for financial modelling.
  • Pit/stope design and optimization.
  • Overseeing and assisting with the development of service offering toolkits and competency.
  • Performing equipment selection and optimization studies.
  • Developing and advising mining clients on operating cost models.
  • Writing technical reports and CPR compilation.
  • Performing trade-off studies / cost options analyses.
  • Performing and advising mining clients with cut-off grade analysis.
  • Undertaking due diligence studies and technical audits.

The good stuff you get:

  • Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
  • Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)
