Senior Geotechnical Engineer (26026)
GEMTEC
Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Are you an experienced Geotechnical Engineer
looking to take the next step in your career? We're seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer
to join our growing team, based in our Halifax, Nova Scotia office.
At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We’re an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm – not too big, not too small. We’re large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team. Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers.
We know our people are our greatest strength. When our employees thrive – bringing their ideas, creativity, and unique strengths – our whole team moves forward. We’d welcome the chance to see what you could bring to the team.
You’re an ideal candidate if you:
- Enjoy solving complex challenges.
- Communicate clearly – interpersonally, in writing, and in technical discussions.
- Stay organized and pay attention to the details that matter.
- Bring strong technical skills backed by solid hands‑on experience.
- Take initiative, collaborate effectively, and move projects forward with minimal direction.
- Approach your work with ownership, pride, and accountability.
A typical day on the job might look like:
- Lead geotechnical projects from planning through delivery, including field investigations, analysis, design, and preparation of technical reports for transportation infrastructure, buildings, land development, municipal infrastructure, marine applications, and mining/resource and energy projects.
- Complete advanced geotechnical analyses, including bearing capacity and settlement, uplift and pullout resistance, lateral load-deformation response, slope stability, and seismic evaluations.
- Develop geotechnical design solutions in soil and rock for shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, roadway and rail embankments, pavement subgrades, excavation support systems, trenchless installations, staged embankments, and ground improvement techniques.
- Collaborate with teams across GEMTEC offices, particularly on large or multidisciplinary projects, to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Perform project management duties, including proposal preparation, budgeting, scheduling, scope management, quality control, and project summary reporting.
- Mentor junior staff, providing technical guidance and supporting their professional development.
- Promote a safe working environment by following all health and safety protocols.
- Adhere to all company policies and perform other duties as required.
The good stuff you get:
- Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
- Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
- Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
- Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
- Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)
Your background and what you bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Civil, or Geological Engineering from a recognized university. A Master’s or Doctorate is considered an asset.
- A solid foundation of technical expertise built over 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, demonstrating competency in both field investigations and office-based analysis and design. Prior consulting experience is considered a strong asset.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, with eligibility for licensure with Engineers Nova Scotia.
- Proven ability to build and maintain successful working relationships with public- and private‑sector clients, as well as subcontractors and project partners.
- Skilled in a range of geotechnical analysis tools, including GeoStudio Suite (Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W), Rocscience Tools (Slide2, Settle3), Ensoft Applications (LPile, GROUP), and borehole logging and geotechnical data management software.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products, particularly Word and Excel, for technical reporting, data management, and project documentation.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel.
