About this opportunity:
This master’s thesis focuses on exploring and evaluating protocol-based communication frameworks – such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – for AI agents and tools. As agent-based systems mature, ensuring safe, modular, and interoperable interactions between components is crucial for scaling and maintaining robust AI ecosystems. You will investigate how emerging standards like MCP can define agent capabilities, supported data formats, and contextual assumptions, as well as how these standards can enable structured coordination between language models, tools, and agent frameworks. The outcome will contribute to Ericsson’s broader research on agentic architectures by establishing best practices for discoverable, reliable, and extensible agent-tool communication.
What you will do:
• Research and evaluate MCP and similar interface protocols for multi-agent environments
• Define and experiment with capability contracts and metadata for agents/tools (functions, expected formats, preconditions)
• Explore schema alignment methods using OpenAPI, JSON Schema, or related standards
• Implement auto-discovery and introspection mechanisms for agents and tools to understand each other at runtime
• Test interoperability across agent frameworks like LangGraph, CrewAI, and OpenAI Assistants with MCP-style communication contracts
• Assess failure handling, versioning strategies, and generalization across varied agent/tool types
The skills you bring:
• Currently pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or AI
• Experience in API design, schema modeling (e.g., JSON, AWS Bedrock), or inter-service communication
• Familiarity with LLMs, agent-based frameworks, or orchestration tools is a plus
• Proficiency in Python and JS and ability to work with technical specifications
• Interest in system architecture, modularity, and secure communication between AI components
