The Opportunity:
4-month work term: Sept – December 2025 (extension possible)
Intern must be in greater area of Ottawa.
How You Will Contribute:
Support engineers in the Solution Engineering & Introduction (SE&I) team responsible for new product introduction (NPI) for all products in Ciena’s Optical Systems portfolio. SE&I is an engineering, customer-facing team that works directly with Product Development, Product Line Management, Sales Engineering and Services organizations to ensure engineering readiness in bringing our cutting-edge solutions to the market.
In general, the Intern may work on any combination of these:
- support with day-to-day activities such as lab preparation, organizational/administrative tasks involving document management, tracking hardware inventory, etc.
- develop various software tools to automate some of SE&I manual workflows or processes
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to review the latest advancements in AI, explore their potential applications and make a proposal for an SE&I use case
- Build and maintain backend logic and scripts for the automated testing tool of optical transceivers
- Help design and develop user-friendly GUIs
- Always comprehensively document their work/code and train extended team with user guides or Confluence
Must Haves:
- Currently enrolled in Bachelor of Electrical/Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent engineering program
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Well organized, methodological, and quick learner
- Proven experience with Python for both GUI development and backend scripting
- Familiarity with GUI frameworks such as Tkinter, PyQt, or Kivy
- Basic industry understanding of GRPC, NETCONF and REST API framework.
Assets:
- Basic industry understanding of telecommunications network terminology and technology such as DWDM, optical transport, Ethernet, and OTN.
- Experience with AI/Machine Learning libraries and frameworks (like TensorFlow or PyTorch).
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
Pay Range: The hourly pay range for the position is $24.50 - $33.00
