What You’ll Be Doing:
The Energy, Infrastructure, & Transition (“EIT”) team provides investment banking services to existing and prospective clients in the power, utilities, renewables, infrastructure, midstream, upstream energy, and energy transition sectors. The team has a global coverage strategy across North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia. Our client-centric approach incorporates M&A and other financial advisory services with full access to the debt, equity and loan capital markets. The team also delivers complex risk and hedging solutions to clients. The EIT team manages a market leading platform from our offices in New York, Houston, Toronto, Calgary, London, and Bogota. Our New York office is the largest in EIT’s global footprint.
EIT’s coverage universe across the power, utilities, infrastructure, and energy sectors provides the opportunity to play an integral role advising on significant and marquee transactions that support the AI build-out and broader re-industrialization of North America. The team’s coverage mandate includes conventional and renewable power, regulated utilities and utility infrastructure, , infrastructure, midstream, upstream energy, and energy transition. The EIT team supports our clients through a variety of transactions including M&A, strategic advisory, capital structure advisory, equity and debt capital financings, and tax equity transactions.
The EIT team is a leading advisor in the power, utilities, and renewables sectors maintaining a top 5 position in the North American M&A league tables.
With guidance from Managing Directors, Executive Directors or Directors, the Associate will complete assignments that help our clients achieve their goals and impact the CIBC's bottom line through transaction and financing execution, client relationship support, industry and company research, and contributing to the overall communication flow across our global offices. The role provides you with steep learning and an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients’ businesses with exposure to company executives and board of directors.
- Assist in executing all facets of the group’s mandates
- Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities
- Play a key role in the preparation of client proposals, pitches, and the execution of new and existing client mandates, including overseeing Analyst work:
- Develop and audit sophisticated financial models
- Participate in cross functional teams and liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in executing mandates or preparing proposals for clients
- Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations
- Lead industry comparable value and transaction precedent analyses
- Assist in company due diligence processes
- Support senior investment banking colleagues and directing and training analyst teammates
- Take advantage of in depth technical and industry knowledge, as well as the geopolitical environment to generate transaction ideas/opportunities that can be discussed with the relevant relationship manager and deal/coverage teams
Relationship Building – Grow your internal and external networks by participating in the following activities:
- Coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists
- Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients
- Developing relationships and actively communicating with various appropriate contacts at our clients
- Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups and other business groups
- Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, clients, prospects, etc.)
- Supporting CIBC’s “Culture of Care” through involvement in community activities
- Actively managing and mentoring the Analysts that work with you and providing regular feedback to them
How You’ll Succeed:
Associates on the EIT team will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within their group and play a critical role in mentoring and training Analysts on the team. Typically, Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects, such as mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, equity and debt financings, and capital structure and strategic advisory projects, and must have strong prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities. You will also be expected to maintain an awareness of our clients, industry, regulatory issues, and relevant economic/political trends.
Applying your strengths in quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analysis and models while extracting the “big picture” implications of such analysis will be critical to your success. The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires dedication, passion for the industry and a very solid work ethic.
As part of the EIT deal team, you will gain exposure to working with individuals from various groups across the firm, globally. A team approach to executing coverage, M&A advisory and financing assignments is designed to provide progressive, on-the-job, training.

- Education You’ve Completed. Finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science or economics undergraduate degree. Completion of a CA or CFA, is preferred and an MBA or Masters in Finance is an asset.
- Industry Experience. A minimum of 3 to 4 years of previous experience in one or more of investment banking, corporate finance, or private equity. Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis. Working knowledge of the power/renewables, utilities, infrastructure, midstream, and/or energy transition sectors as well as direct investment banking experience are assets.
- Financial Skills. Excellent analytical ability including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analyses. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.
- Technical Skills (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (CapitalIQ, Refinitiv, FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.
- Collaborative and Professional. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $175,000-$225,000 for the New York, New York market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.
