What you’ll be doing
The Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk reports to the Director, Technology Operational Risk and provides independent challenge and proactive oversight and assessment of all aspects of identification, measurement, mitigation and monitoring (effective challenge) of technology operational risks. This role is responsible for supporting the execution of regulatory compliance Oversight Function responsibilities for technology risk, as well as oversight to internal control assessment processes through independent review of design and measurement, deficiency management, and operational effectiveness of established internal controls for assigned technology business unit portfolios. In this capacity, the Senior Manager will build partnership with the technology teams and risk partners across CIBC to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to managing technology risk.

How you’ll succeed
Regulatory Oversight – Supports the execution of the technology risk regulatory compliance management process, in alignment with the enterprise Regulatory Compliance Management (RCM) Policy & supporting guidance, to facilitate oversight function accountabilities and ensure program requirements and controls as applicable are effectively implemented and adhered to in support of the Chief Compliance Officer's assessment of the adequacy and effectiveness of RCM controls.
Risk management: As an individual contributor, the Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk reviews operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies, metrics, and other relevant information to form an independent view of technology risks and perform effective challenge. You will act as the GORM Portfolio Manager (single point of contact) for assigned business units within Technology business units and provide operational risk advice to enhance the management of operational risk, including advising on risk mitigation strategies. A risk-based approach is leveraged to understand and manage risk of technology-related activities to ensure alignment to operational risk management policies and framework and CIBC risk appetite. In alignment with GORM’s operational risk management program and practices, this includes independent assessment of business lines on activities such as projects (CIRAs), risk and controls self-assessments (RCSAs), Operational Incidents, RAS and KRI development and monitoring. The Senior Manager leverages strong data and analytical skills to perform detailed research to produce risk insights on current and emerging technologies Risk Reviews/Scorecards, and External Event reviews, etc., for distribution to various internal audiences. Impactful and insightful risk reporting is produced for presentation to senior leaders within CIBC.
Technical expertise - You bring instant credibility by skillfully leveraging your strong breadth of technology experience and depth of knowledge in key areas such as cloud computing, network and infrastructure management, technology architecture, IT service management, IT Asset Management and development and deployment practices (SDLC, DevOps, Agile) to review risks and controls of the business lines and drive positive risk management outcomes. You are relied upon for your deep expertise in specific domains to support the risk activities across the team (e.g. risk reviews, project reviews) operating in a matrix style team. Industry recognized technology certifications in their Subject Matter Expertise are preferred such as ITIL, CISM etc.
Collaboration – You will leverage your strong communication, interpersonal skills and teamwork to build and sustain strong internal relationships where you are viewed as a valued partner that offers sound guidance and demonstrates a deep understanding of their environment and context. The Sr Manager, Technology Operational Risk will be required to provide support to the entire Global Operational Risk (GORM) team where the application of their specific area(s) of technology expertise is required. This means that the Sr Risk Manager will be working on activities (e.g. Technology Scorecard assessments) that support other Directors within the Technology Operational Risk team.
Communicate Effectively – You demonstrate clarity of thought in both written and verbal communications. You will facilitate productive risk discussions and outcomes and will develop and deliver strong reporting content, presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees.
Proactive oversight and assessment – You will review operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies and other relevant information to form an independent view of operational risks. You will identify material and emerging risks through proactive risk reviews and monitoring of Key Risk Indicators and External Events. You will effectively communicate areas or concern to ensure appropriate risk mitigation actions are taken.
Facilitate Innovation – Support change and the maintenance of effective Operational Risk programs that allows CIBC to fulfill its purpose-driven mission. This will include new ideas that supports CIBC’s goal of an effective, efficient and radically simple Operational Risk and Control program
Who you are
Bachelors degree in Business, Technology or related field, or equivalent professional experience
5-10 years industry-related experience; strong understanding of the Canadian Banking Industry (issues, trends, competitors)
Strong working knowledge of technology operations, management and development practices, processes and controls and operational risk management practices
Strong technical skills sufficient to support data analysis, metric development, reporting generation, etc
Strong understanding of regulatory landscape as it pertains to the design and operations of technology processes and capabilities
Excellent leadership and business planning skills
Excellent communications skills (written and verbal)
Excellent relationship building skills to establish key relationships within lines of business and other business partners, including governance and oversight functions
Expert knowledge in technology related regulatory requirements and industry trends
Problem solving skills sufficient to creatively develop unique approaches and solutions necessary to resolve high level, complex and often unprecedented issues
