Strategic Business Unit Description

The Capital Markets arm of CIBC provides integrated capital markets products, investment banking advisory services, corporate lending and top-ranked research to corporate, government, institutional and retail clients around the world. Our goal is to be the leading Capital Markets franchise in Canada and the lead relationship bank for key clients globally. CIBC Capital Markets consists of three lines of business; Global Markets, Global Investment Banking and Corporate Banking.

Job Purpose

The Executive Director will work with Managing Directors, Executive Directors, Associates and Analysts to contribute to expanding CIBC Global Investment Banking’s presence in industry specific sectors. The ED will lead the execution of sector/industry specific mandates and transactions across asset classes through analytical, financial structuring, oversight over developing detailed financial models, and research along with other senior professionals in the group. The ED will be required to foster and develop client relationships, through a depth of sector/industry specific knowledge, regulatory issues and relevant economic/political trends.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify opportunities and sign fee paying mandates with our clients

  • Lead the execution of sector/industry specific financial advisory mandates

  • Act as the central point of contact between the deal team and client team members throughout transaction execution

  • Conduct client meetings alongside other CIBC team members

  • Lead and oversee financial modeling and analyses and provide corresponding recommendations to internal and client stakeholders

  • Conduct deal related due diligence activities and present findings internally as well as directly to the client

  • Work with outside working group members including legal advisors, tax & accounting advisors, technical advisors, market/demand advisors, insurance advisors, auditors, etc.

  • Maintain responsibility for the overall information and communication flow on deal teams

  • Research, develop and maintain a thorough understanding of our clients’ businesses, investment portfolios and industry to assist in the identification and analysis of business/investment opportunities

  • Ensure the coverage team is aware of material developments in the industry and the marketplace in which our clients operate

  • Identify and anticipate our clients’ needs and provide excellent client service through coverage and transaction execution

  • Coordinate client-focused and deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists

  • Liaise with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients

  • Develop and maintain an internal network with product groups and other business groups

  • Develop and maintain an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, prospects, mid-level client representatives, etc.) and support CIBC’s image through involvement in community activities

  • Actively manage and mentor Directors, Associates and Analysts and provide regular coaching, teaching, and feedback

  • Ensures that recommendation and opinions offered to clients are in compliance with legislation and at all times maintains the professional standards and policies of CIBC

Knowledge and Skills

  • Significant knowledge and experience in sector/industry specific development with a successful track record in executing transactions of a variety of types.

  • An ongoing knowledge of state of affairs at sector/industry specific companies and investors.

  • Strong ability to analyze and interpret complex issues and apply/resolve these in innovate ways.

  • Strong financial, analytical and judgment skills.

  • Exceptionally strong influencing skills sufficient to significantly promote and/or negotiate on behalf of CIBC in situations that involve recognizing and responding to underlying concerns where others need to be persuaded to accept compromise solutions.

  • Well-developed influencing and negotiating skills sufficient to influence the decision-making process in situations that involve matters of business policy or strategy and which engender cross business support for initiatives.

  • Advanced presentation/interactive skills sufficient to convey complex conceptual information/ideas on issues involving extensive interpretation and opinion.

  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills and convey and to distill complex conceptual information.

  • Solid understanding of financial statement and reporting for financial institutions.

  • Advanced management/leadership skills sufficient to lead/motivate large number of professional staff in a number of occupational areas to achieve planned objectives.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary of $300,000 for the New York, NY market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component. Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. Additional total compensation and benefits details will be provided during the hiring process.
