Position Overview

We are seeking a Registered Psychologist to provide psychological risk assessment services within a federal correctional healthcare environment in Nova Scotia.

This opportunity is suited to a psychologist with experience in forensic, correctional, clinical or counselling psychology who is comfortable conducting comprehensive psychological assessments, evaluating risk and treatment needs, and preparing high-quality professional reports.

The psychologist will primarily support services at Nova Institution for Women in Truro, Nova Scotia, working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare and case management team. The underlying assignment is focused on psychological risk assessment services and collaboration with professionals across psychology, nursing, social work, occupational therapy and case management.

The role offers the opportunity to apply clinical expertise within a specialized forensic environment while contributing to informed decisions related to treatment, case management, risk management and community reintegration.

Responsibilities

The psychologist will be responsible for conducting comprehensive psychological risk assessments and providing professional consultation as required. Responsibilities may include:

• Conducting psychological and risk assessment interviews.
• Reviewing relevant clinical, health, correctional and case management records.
• Administering, scoring and interpreting appropriate psychological and risk assessment instruments.
• Integrating information obtained through clinical interviews, psychological testing, file review and consultation with other professionals.
• Assessing risk factors, treatment needs, responsivity factors, protective factors and risk-management considerations.
• Preparing comprehensive psychological risk assessment reports and recommendations.
• Communicating assessment findings in accordance with professional and organizational requirements.
• Collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare professionals and correctional case management teams.
• Participating in case conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, consultations and related activities when required.
• Maintaining complete, accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Providing services in accordance with applicable professional, ethical, legislative, privacy and practice standards.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements to be considered.

• Current Registration or Licensure. You must hold a current and valid licence or registration as a psychologist with the applicable provincial regulatory body in the province where services will be provided.
• Proof of current registration or licensure will be required before placement.

Relevant Professional Experience

Within the past five years, you must have at least two years of professional experience in one of the following areas:

• Correctional or forensic psychology; or
• Clinical psychology and/or counselling psychology.

Psychological Risk Assessment Experience

You must have completed a minimum of five psychological risk assessments within the past five years.

Candidates who progress through the selection process will be asked to provide information allowing this experience to be verified, including the organization where the assessments were completed, the approximate dates of the work and an appropriate professional or administrative reference.

Additional Requirements

While not mandatory, preference may be given to psychologists with experience in:

• Forensic or correctional environments.
• Structured psychological risk assessment.
• Actuarial or structured professional judgment tools.
• Complex mental health and behavioural presentations.
• Assessment of criminogenic needs and risk factors.
• Working with women in forensic or correctional settings.
• Working with Indigenous and culturally diverse populations.
• Interdisciplinary healthcare or case management teams.
• Preparing psychological reports used to support treatment, correctional, release or risk-management decisions.
• Working within environments involving heightened confidentiality, privacy and security requirements.

The contract requires services to take gender, cultural, religious and linguistic differences into account and to be responsive to the specific needs of women and Indigenous people.
