Job Type: Casual, Part-time, or Full-time

Position Overview

We are seeking experienced Nurse Practitioners to join a virtual primary care program supporting patients across Saskatchewan who do not currently have access to a family physician, Nurse Practitioner, or established primary care team.

This initiative is designed to improve access to timely primary care while providing patients with safe, convenient and clinically appropriate care through secure virtual consultations. The program will support Saskatchewan residents until they can be connected with a permanent primary care provider. Nurse Practitioners will provide comprehensive primary care through virtual encounters, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, diagnostic investigation, referrals and appropriate follow-up.

Responsibilities

As a Virtual Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, you will independently assess and manage patients presenting with a broad range of primary care concerns through secure virtual consultations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct virtual patient assessments by video and/or telephone.
  • Assess symptoms, medical history and presenting concerns and develop appropriate clinical impressions and treatment plans.
  • Provide medical advice, treatment and patient education.
  • Prescribe and renew medications within your authorized scope of practice.
  • Order and review laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging as clinically appropriate.
  • Initiate referrals to specialists and other healthcare services.
  • Determine when a patient’s condition cannot be safely or effectively managed virtually and facilitate appropriate in-person follow-up.
  • Direct patients to primary care clinics, urgent care or emergency departments when clinically indicated.
  • Provide appropriate follow-up for investigations, referrals and ongoing clinical concerns.
  • Follow evidence-based clinical guidelines and established virtual-care protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and complete clinical documentation following each encounter.
  • Participate in clinical quality, patient safety, privacy, consent and emergency-response procedures.

Qualifications

  • Hold or be eligible to obtain active licensure as a Nurse Practitioner through the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS).
  • Be eligible to obtain a formal Appointment to the Practitioner Staff of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).
  • Maintain active professional liability/malpractice insurance with coverage appropriate for the services being provided.
  • Be able to successfully complete all required SHA credentialing requirements.
  • Provide professional references.
  • Provide a current criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector search.
  • Provide evidence of professional standing and other credentialing documentation as required.

Experience

The successful candidate will ideally bring:

  • Experience practising as a Nurse Practitioner in primary care, family practice, community health, urgent care or a comparable clinical environment.
  • Strong clinical assessment and independent decision-making skills.
  • Experience managing a broad range of common primary care presentations.
  • Demonstrated competence in prescribing, diagnostic investigation, referrals and ongoing patient management.
  • Strong understanding of when virtual care is clinically appropriate and when an in-person assessment or higher level of care is required.
  • Experience providing virtual care or telehealth services considered an asset.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records and digital clinical systems.
  • Strong written clinical documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients through telephone and video-based encounters.
  • Ability to practise independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, clinical support teams and other healthcare providers.

Schedule

The program is expected to provide virtual primary care at minimum during typical weekday office hours, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional evening and weekend coverage may also be offered based on patient demand.

The Patient Population

The program supports Saskatchewan residents who currently do not have a regular family physician, Nurse Practitioner or primary care team. Virtual care is intended to provide accessible primary care while patients await attachment to a permanent provider.
