Position Overview
Calian is seeking an experienced primary care physician to take on the role of Assistant Base Surgeon at CFB Cold Lake in Alberta. The Assistant Base Surgeon is an essential member of the health care team that provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary, collaborative primary health care services to Canadian Armed Forces members. These services include primary care, occupational, minor trauma care, health promotion, prevention of diseases and injuries, rehabilitation, and support services.
Responsibilities
- Provide medical care following provincial, national, and Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) standards and policies.
- Assess medical fitness for duty (e.g., pre/post-deployment, periodic, and hazardous occupation assessments).
- Diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate occupational and environmental injuries/illnesses.
- Establish and manage medical employment limitations (MEL) and sick leave recommendations.
- Communicate with leadership on medical fitness and assist in return-to-work/transition programs.
- Primary Care: Deliver comprehensive care for acute and chronic conditions, including specialist referrals when necessary.
- Supervise and support healthcare team members (e.g., physician assistants, nurse practitioners), ensuring care aligns with patient needs and provider competencies.
- Mentor medical trainees (students, residents, physician assistants), providing feedback and ensuring competency.
- Conduct file reviews, audits, and peer evaluations to uphold clinical standards and patient safety.
- Assist the Base Surgeon with tasks like policy implementation, medical reviews, patient safety investigations, and inter-departmental coordination.
Qualifications
- Licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
- Certification in Family Medicine with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
- 1 year equivalent experience working in a CF Health Services Centre
- Completion of CF Basic Aviation OR Basic Dive Medicine course
- Basic Life Support for Health Providers or CPR/AED Level C
