JOB PURPOSE:

The Engineering Manager is responsible for ensuring engineering processes are developed, providing technical support and advice to other departments in the interpretation of standards, drawings and codes of practice. Thereby enabling the Company to successfully manufacture components and assemblies to meet all customer requirements and regulatory requirements.

JOB STRUCTURE & COMMUNICATIONS:

This position reports to the Components Engineer Manager at BWXT. This position has direct leadership of the Engineers and CNC Programmers.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Ensure that all Manufacturing Inspection and Test Plans (MITPs), Manufacturing Control Sheets (MCSs) and Work Instructions (WI) are in place and launched on-time, maintained and controlled.
  • Manage and support the Engineering department staff in thier daily activities by providing leadership and ensuring schedualed deadlines are met.
  • Review and approve Material Requisitions, Manufacturing Inspection and Test Plans (MITP’s), Procedures and Operational Detail Sheets.
  • Support Production and CNC Programming in creation and maintenance of procedures, technical specifications and tooling/fixture requirements.
  • Drive the timely completion of components for Pre-Production Qualification (PPQ).
  • Direct Continuous Improvement activities within the Company to optimize product flow, minimize waste and maximize profitability with primary responsibility to lead all run-time and tooling cost reductions for all made parts.
  • Direct the timely disposition of NCRs and DDRs.
  • Respond to the need for and expeditiously implement all Engineering Changes ensuring that configuration control is maintained in all ITPs, MCSs, and other Procedures.
  • Support the other department in all matters requiring technical support and collaboration to meet schedule and Company objectives.
  • Direct the completion of capital expense assessments for all major capital purchases including machine selection for component and assembly production.
  • Approve all designs for externally supplied tooling and fixtures.
  • Assist the Sales Department with estimating and development of preliminary ITPs, production schedules, and run-time planning.

Administration:

  • Ensure compliance to all labour, human rights, safety, and environmental regulations and associated company policies.
  • Promote various safety initiatives and demonstrates a “safety first” mindset.
  • Responsible for addressing safety concerns and hazards raised by direct reports.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures and ensure the same of direct reports. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment in required areas.
  • Responsible for reporting any personal workplace injuries immediately and supporting in the completion of accident reports for injuries reported by your direct reports.
  • Responsible for employee relations which includes, but is not limited to, hiring, work direction, mentoring, coaching, disciplining and the identification of training needs for employees.
  • Manage and mentor employees. This includes setting performance targets, establishing annual goals with employees and conducting performance reviews as required by company policy.
  • Ensures all employees are suitably trained/qualified/licensed for the various tasks and jobs they must complete.
  • Sets a positive example by maintaining a respective attitude, cooperating with co-workers, management, and internal and external customers
  • Report to work for regularly scheduled shifts on time and ready to work.
  • Effectively give and receive feedback and willingly asks questions and seek direction as needed.
  • Willingly accepts responsibility of sharing skills and knowledge with other employees.
  • Maintains an acceptable level of performance by following established policies and procedures, and participating in continuous improvement efforts by supporting and implementing new ideas.
  • Be a productive team member and help to meet established departmental and Company goals.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with high standing from a recognized university.
  • Licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng. designation)
  • At least ten years of full-time experience working in either the nuclear,power, mining, aerospace or defence industries; management experience is beneficial. This experience shall be in the manufacture of CNC precision-machined components and related processes including heat treatment, plating, assembly and testing activities.
  • Understanding of ASME Section III and Section IX Code and the ISO9001:2008, CSA N285.0 and CAN3-CSA Z299/N299 quality standards is an asset.
  • Familiarity with components and tooling for a Candu reactor would be an asset.
  • Expertise in reading and interpreting engineering component drawings including a very strong understanding of metrology and GD&T.
  • Proficiency using Solidworks for part model and drawing creation.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills to lead within a team-based environment.
  • SAP knowledge and experience would be an asset.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $100,000 and $156,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
