Reporting to the Director, Fund Investments (Ecosystem Development & Portfolio Analytics), as Associate Director, Fund Investments (Ecosystem Development), your primary role will be to source and rigorously assess new fund investment opportunities by evaluating fund management teams, expected merits, risks, returns and market dynamics. This primarily includes the assessment of a range of fund manager types including emerging managers focused on underserved sectors, regions, and populations, as well as alternative fund models. You will participate in the making of these new fund investments and the management and monitoring of a portion of the fund investment portfolio across Canada.
We are looking for an individual with experience and understanding of core principles guiding investment analysis and portfolio management in venture capital and/or private equity funds. You have excellent financial, negotiation and communication skills, hands-on management experience and a real passion for business along with an aptitude for developing valuable relationships with professionals focused on early and growth-stage technology companies in Canada. A bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, business or law is preferred, with at least 5-7 years of experience. Fluency in both official languages (English & French) is an asset.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Co-manage a subset of BDC’s fund of fund’s portfolio (primarily venture capital partnerships) by evaluating investment managers, developing recommendations, participating in negotiations on various investments, and monitoring, managing and leveraging relationships with fund managers
Source new fund investment opportunities and perform due diligence on new opportunities/existing investments including quality of management team, expected merits and risks, expected returns and market dynamics
Guide Associates and Analysts in analyzing investment opportunities and recommend investments to the BDC Capital Funds Investment Committee
Provide support and input into the making and managing of fund investments across Canada, particularly as it relates to developing the ecosystem in its underserved sectors, regions, and populations
Participate in the management and monitoring (both financial and administrative) of the investment portfolio and perform reviews of existing partnerships and underlying investments
Participate in the evaluation and management of the overall portfolio structure including the analysis and evaluation of market and portfolio trends and derive implications
Prepare and deliver presentations to the Board Investment Committee and Board of Directors with respect to proposed fund investments or strategic reviews of the Ecosystem Development portfolio
Represent BDC’s interests on Fund LPACs as appropriate
Cultivate relationships in the LP/GP community (i.e. business development activities)
Liaise and collaborate with the broader BDC Capital Funds team and corresponding strategies, as well as with other BDC Capital internal teams including middle office and direct investing teams.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business, economics, law, or any related field
MBA, CFA or other financial equivalent preferred
A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in an investment role with a financial institution or as an asset manager, institutional investor or large corporation operating in the investment space
Experience in managing fund investment portfolios and leading due diligence of fund investments in the private equity and venture capital area
Familiarity with fund documentation and negotiation
Experience serving on a Limited Partner Advisory Committee would be considered an asset
