POSITION OVERVIEW

The Advisor, Corporate Sustainability, is part of the Sustainability and Diversity team in BDC’s Strategy and Impact Unit. The role is a key contributor to the achievement of BDC’s sustainability ambitions. It is principally responsible for developing Sustainability resources for SMEs to across Canada create strong resilient businesses and build a clean, low carbon, circular economy.

This position requires a deep understanding of how SME entrepreneurs embed economic, social and environmental sustainability into their business models, objectives, and operations. The Advisor will have experience advising SME entrepreneurs and in using strategic planning tools for sustainability.

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

  • Provide Sustainability expertise both internally and externally.

  • Create Sustainability content and resources for SMEs in a matrix environment managing all stakeholder expectation.

  • Enable BDC employees to use the Sustainability content and resources.

  • Contribute to BDC’s Sustainability SME engagement plan through various relationships.

  • Meet with entrepreneurs (clients and prospects) to discuss sustainability.

  • Assist the Sustainability team as needed.

  • Provide data and reporting support as needed.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field tied to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability, or a combination of education, professional and volunteer experience that develop this knowledge.

  • At least ten years of professional experience in sustainability at or with an SME, or – ideally – experience with different sized companies in different sectors

  • Knowledge of sustainability standards, tools, and reporting, specifically the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the B Corp certification, and including others such as the GHG Protocol, CDP, SASB, etc., and emerging practices, e.g., TCFD

  • Proven passion for SME entrepreneurs’ social and environmental impact

  • Excellent people skills, e.g., active listening, diplomacy and tact

  • Excellent project management skills

  • A team player committed to achieving common goals.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, and superior presentation skills. Fluency in both official languages (English and French) is required.

  • Experience working in a matrix organization would be valuable.
